Asus, when are you fixing parental control !!!

For what it's worth I am using parental control to disable our daughters wireless internet access at 10 - 11 pm, depending on the night, and re-enable it the next morning at 8 a.m.

It works perfectly.

Glad to hear it works for you; it gives us hope. how and why is it working for you and not us; do you know something we dont-please share what you know. would love to duplicate your router settings if thats what it takes- there are so many though ! I also thank RMerlin for his LAN-Switch control suggestion, I am open to try anything!

to add fidelity to the issue; Parental Control 'partially' works. What doesn't work at all is the time management ALLOW/DENY feature; if you place a check mark in the box for a particular MAC and slide the ENABLE PARENTAL CONTROL to the ON position then that particular MAC will NOT have wi fi access REGARDLESS OF THE TIME MANAGEMENT SETTING. you can click every time slot ALLOWING wi fi access 24/7 but it will have no effect! you are not getting wi fi as long as the MAC is check marked and the slider is in the ON position. basically it does not care for your ALLOW/DENY time settings.

There are various known issues related to browser compatibility which means that the time slots are not saved to the router's nvram. Asus fixed some compatibility issues specific to IE10 with 374, but they are still looking into various other compatibility issues that are still left. Have you tried reconfiguring the time slots on the calendar using a different browser?

Also when you re-edit the calendar, are the selected time slots showing up, or is the calendar still showing up as blank? Here is how it should look if you re-edit an existing client's timeslots.

I can only tell you what I did.

I accessed the router page using Chrome and Firmware 3.0.0.4.372.31 (Merlin build), enabled Parental control, selected two client pc's/devices, clicked the edit button for each in turn and dragged the sliders to highlight the required time periods, with the function set to allow the highlighted times.

The router then blocks access to my daughters smartphone and netbook outside the highlighted times and allows it within them.

I'd rather spend quality time with kids piloting themas a role model than trying to shift parent's job to technology or sum of money thrown at it. I am glad my kids are raised traditionally and hope they raise theirs like they are raised.

IMHO i think there are easier ways to restrict access by children, you can use the wireless radio scheduler and also the web site filter by keyword.

if your looking for a more robust solution then a router is not the answer you need to set your pc/mac up as a proxy server.

parental controls are another marketing tool used by companies to sell products, so i suggest they are treated that way.

I can only tell you what I did.

I gave up using Chrome on flash attempts. I actually had instances when funny things would happen with Chrome (and not haha funny) when I attempted a firmware flash. After a while my pea brain figured using IE (8 at the time) couldn't hurt. No problem at all once I tried IE 8. After that I usually use IE although sometimes my stupidity prevails and I will flash from within Pale Moon.

I have a very simple solution to my children bypassing any controls I put in place. I threaten to punish them severely...and they know I mean it.

Try this and look at the iptables, you will find something wrong (3.0.0.4.374.32 merlin build):

Mark all full days as allowed and let only wednesday as not-allowed.
You will find that the iptables don't allow thursday, friday and saturday, which is wrong.
The iptables become correct again when you set the last slot of saturday as not-allowed.

Hope that this helps to find a solution.

Dang it then. I wonder why they even provide a web page allowing one to set up this conguration. Or even list the feature on the retail boxes of the various routers/devices?

I'm not trying to be controversial or anything, as I really agree with you. But then again, I've never found myself in a situation where I would need this feature. Matter of fact, I really like this post:

I never had to setup a login with that pic as my kids already "knew".

But I know where you're coming: parents have got to get true control over their kids. Too many parents leave that to other means or just don't care.

The thing is, is that not every parent/guardian or whatever is in a similar position/situation as I am (or maybe even you).

Of course if it's really bad they've got to lock the net connection and modem/router in a "safe".

The Parental Control code is fairly complex and is devoid of any comment. Just understand how that code works would take me days of analysis - not something I'm willing to spend my time on, sorry. You will have to wait for Asus to debug it.

I don't have experience in building firmwares or cross compilation, but I think I found the bug. Please look at the attached modified code. Only few lines changed in the config_daytime_string function.

I don't have any compiler to check but I hope this solves the issue!

It does resolve at least this particular scenario when I tested it here (the generated rules look a bit odd however).

Parental Control has been in the firmware since day one, as it's a feature of the original FW.
