ASUS XT8 issues

can you revert the firmware upgrade that was done and turn off auto updates ?
With some direction I probably could and the good news is the main xt8 that I used at my old house is still there so I know exactly what firmware it is. But are we sure it’s a firmware issue ?

I will note that I have a node in my garage and have 2 WiFi garage doors and I noticed they were connected to a node further away. I forced it to that AP and got a warning that signal was low and it’s definitely not….after I did the hard reset today I did it on all the units and same thing happened in the garage….maybe my system is just cursed lol

So how do you determine which node the garage IOTs connected to ?
How do you force them to connect to a specific node ?

Through the app you can see whats connected to what node and click on the specific clients, in my case they're labled MyQ xxx and bind them to an ap

So tonight in my ongoing efforts to try and figure this out I switched one of my nodes to the main router and vise versa ….still the same…I was thinking maybe there was something wrong internally with that particular device. No luck…same results. I did swing by my other house where I still have one node and done a speed test and paying for 400mbs and got 460..only thing different is that unit is on the older firmware and I couldn’t remember my password to see which one so I’ll have to reset it and make sure not to update it.

Today I brought home my last node from the old house that has the old firmware. I didn’t update and I set it up a router here and it did not change the speed….im at a loss at this point. It makes zero sense. It tested faster at the old house on a slower connection.

Everyone out of ideas ? ASUS support is useless, my ISP sells a router that isn’t as fast. I was going to buy a 2nd hand xt12 and try it as a router but thinking about just switching to a different brand.

Always test these sorts of issues with LAN connection on the router. Never use wifi.

perhaps a protocol issue in dealing with the XT8 and ISP ONT.
On the WAN, what settings are required by the ISP ?
It is getting a IPv6 address or IPv4 ?
Is the ISP using CGNAT ?

Have you asked them or do they have a list of recommended routers ?
Can/do they provide a router usually ?

I have tested both ways and when I called them last week for advise the rep told me that even on their 1gb service with their supplied router that customers will get 3-350 download as the router is capped there. She then went to tell me that my router was what was capping my speed until I explained to her that the same router gets over 450 on my previous ISP.

As far as settings required, when I moved in, I reset the node hooked the supply cable to the blue port and configured it through the app and had internet. I didn’t have to give any user name or any other settings.

I can check the IPv4 or IPv6 and CGNAT when I get home.

Here is a long shot that has sometimes fixed connection issues. If you have or can borrow a spare 5 or 8 port un-managed gigabit switch, try plugging the ISP cable into it first, power the switch on for a minute, and then connect your router wan port to the switch. Then power on the router.
You can check that the switch is operating properly by plugging your laptop into the switch after powering the switch on.

It is interesting that they admit to "capping" gigabit speeds by the choice of supplied router. So Gbit/s link rate, but limited bandwidth. If a user connected a PC directly, it probably is Gbit if they are using the same upstream hardware as yours. It is also possible they are sharing bandwidth (like on cable ISPs) and have too many customers on a node. That would typically show up with degraded download speed in the evenings. There is usually very low demand on the upload side. We can't type that fast and even video conferencing is heavily compressed. Reality is 100 Mbit/s is more than enough for a household of people. Rest is marketing.

My laptop hooked up directly gets 525ish and I’ve tested it several times throughout the day and it’s always around the same. Your probably right about the 100mbps being enough but the problem is in my brain now and I can’t make it go away lol.

Would this switch be ok ?

Yes, those are great switches. They are also good at detecting cable issues ;)
Here are the settings you ask for….i think….looks like IPv6 is disabled

nothing there rings a bell for issues.

Going back to post 18, the picture on the left was what situation ?
And the picture on the right (with reduced download) ?

Ok, so the router WAN to LAN is working properly. Router is ok for that side.
You probably don' t need that switch.

Wireless only is the issue then. Lot's of variables there.
If you use an iphone or ipad, get a copy of Apple's Airport Utility. In Settings for the App, tick "enable wifi scan".
Walk around the house and do 15 second scans at important locations. Note the RSSI values at each. They will be negative numbers expressed as dB, e.g. -57 dB. Any value above -65 dB +/- a couple dB is good. Make a plot of the values on a plan view (birds eye view) of your house/building. Post that result here. A sketch is fine. Give approx overall dimensions.

BTW, standing next to the wifi router or any AP "2 ft away" is bad. You need to be a couple meters away at least.

Usually, it is the client radios that create limitations. If there is too much noise, that can also cause issues. Noise can be from too much power.

The download speed decreases as I get further away…like right now I’m in my living room approximately 20-25’ away and here’s my speed

I downloaded the airport utility and this is what I get…no settings

Ok got the airport utility to work…it’s picking up a few of my nodes on first scan and to be clear I’ve done these tests with all nodes turned off and got same speed results
