The majority of AX86U owners posted CPU temperatures much lower than what I see with my device: https://www.snbforums.com/threads/ax86u-thermals.79880/. After seeing this, I'm interested to know what could be causing the higher than normal temperatures with mine. What should I check or change?

Current Temperatures 2.4 GHz: 50°C - 5 GHz: 55°C - CPU: 85°C

3x1GbE + 1x2.5GbE devices plugged in; <20 WiFi devices connected directly and through an XD6 AiMesh node; nothing plugged into USB ports. Running the latest Merlin fw.

Go back to Asuswrt? Works well for me and my curr_cpuTemp = "70.420"

As per the other thread:
Try placing the router in the intended upright position with nothing blocking airflow and see what the numbers look like.

CPU loads averages are normal - and as you can see it's mostly Idle.

I think thermals are very sensible to the room temperature and devices connected to the Ethernet ports, my readings with 78C room temperature and no devices in the x4 LAN ports (using only the 2.5G port, for the backup WAN), are:

2.4G: 46C
5G: 49C
CPU: 66C

I would be returning that unit, depending on the ambient temperature where it is used in.

Most likely higher ambient temperature + 4x LAN ports in use.

Thanks! That helped. From 85 to 78°C

Really? You had your AX86U on its side with air flow restricted?

Unit returned and received replacement. New unit runs at 95°C. Sigh.

Not going to worry about the high temperature anymore.

Are you using it in the upright position? What are the ambient temperatures?

If the first question is yes, and the second is below 30C, I would be returning this one too.

95C is too high for comfort, as the router will start disabling CPU cores if the temperature hits 100C.

You either have bad luck with these or there is more going on:
Upright?
No obstructions e.g. free standing not enclosed or no a shelf with another shelf over it etc..?
