I have a WNDR3700. A while back I used inSSIDer to select a free channel. At the time nobody used channel. In the meantime somebody jumped onto it. Are there better or worse channel numbers to select? Any channels that are safe from "auto-channel"?

in the 2.4GHz band, the three non-overlapping channels are 1, 6 and 11.

The "best" channel is which one of those has the least amount of sustained traffic from your neighbors' WiFi.

The mere existence of several SSIDs on some channel means little. Like a party-line phone, or a freeway lane, what's important is how busy is the channel. Few consumer products have a "channel utilization" measurement tool.

The busyness will vary greatly by time of day and your neighbors' activities. The worst is a neighbor streaming video on 2.4GHz.
