Bit torrent router optimization

I really don't understand a lot of the settings on my dir-655 router, and even those I do understand I'm not sure what they affect...

I'm asking what would be a good configuration for optimal bit torrent traffic, maybe to reduce the lag from games or browsing while seeding or downloading.

Does upnp slow down the router? could disabling it show improvement?

QoS for some reason auto throttled my upload speeds, by a good 20%-30%. this is important for bit torrent, and once i disabled it my upload went back to normal. I'm not sure though if there's something im missing in its usefulness, since a lot people like it.

I know that nat, spi, and wireless security shows slight loss, but i need that.

are there any other settings on the router that could influence how BT performs? I only use it on my wired desktop computer, no wireless torrenting for me.

I mean, when i got the dir-655 there was so much improvement. while seeding 200 torrents on my old linksys i would get DC's, and browsing was nearly impossible. With the new router browsing is possible, but still a bit slower than it would be without seeding. I limit my upload to about 75-80% of my max upload so i always have some upload to work with, and im usually seeding so downloading isnt a problem. why does bit torrent hurt my connection even still? ive got ample download and a good 20kbps of upload to spare.

Ah I've got another setting I'd like to know about, WISH. I've never heard of or seen it, and its enabled on my router. should i keep it enabled?

The automatic QoS on D-Link routers affects upload bandwidth only. Real-time applications such as gaming, voice and video are prioritized over data traffic like Torrents.
If you want top bandwidth for Torrents, then disable the QoS function.

WISH is automatic QoS for wireless. See the D-Link FAQ.

Gee I never touch the QOS and the Wish.. UPnP is enabled though. Just port forwarded the ports reserved the PC you use and that's about it.. Uploads streams seem okay.

...ive got ample download and a good 20kbps of upload to spare.

Do you mean 20kbps or 20kBps (160kbps)? - I assume it's the latter. If you do infact mean 20kbps... then you would benafit greatly from increasing that ammount.

As you approach the upper limit of an internet connection with a low number of concurrent connections; speeds can start to become unstable for various reasons, therefore if you're running any latency sensetive applications (i.e. online games) it's likely they will experience some lag.

I'd recommend you leave QoS enabled, or limit the speed of your torrents during certain times of the day if you wan't to be able to browse and game with ease on this router.

As tim said, if you care only about torrent speed then disable QoS.

Hope that helps.
