BQ16 Pro Smart Device Not Connecting

DBV

New Around Here
Recently purchased the BQ 16 Pro two pack. This is my first Asus mesh system, as have always used Netgear Orbi’s before. I really like the web interface with Asus and there are ton of options, more than I know what to do with. Also - really like the security features that Orbi wants to charge for.

I setup a separate IOT 2.4ghz network and all of my smart devices in that network connected successfully and have stayed connected (at least that I know of). The only smart device that did not connect are Brilliance Outdoor LED landscape lights. I have tried a bunch of different things, but so far unsuccessful. I connected my old Orbi router and then they worked again.

Can anyone think of anything that might cause this problem and how to resolve it?

Thanks for the help!

Hi - yes, I did try power-cycling the LED Outdoor lights.

Other things I have tried:

IOT Network:
2.4 GHZ WPA2-Personal
WPA Encryption AES

Wireless 2.4 GHz:
20/40 MHz and then tried 20 MHz

Under Advance Settings/Wireless/Professional: (saw this on Amazon review)
Disabled WiFi 7 OFDMA
Disable WiFi 7 MU-MIMO

I think that is it so far.

Ended up purchasing a Orbi 970 Two-Pack to try if I can’t get my outdoor lights working, although doubt Orbi would work either and prefer to keep the BQ16 Pro.

Last option is just to plug in my old router when I want to change the color of the outdoor lights, which does not happen too often, but really prefer not to do that.

Thanks again for the help!

Welcome!

Uhg... that would be burdensome to say the least 🤕

I haven't enabled IoT and am currently using 2.4GHz for many of my SmartThings Devices and all is working well. Swapped out a NetGear R6900v2 and everything came back online without any issues (80+- Devices in all... wired,, 5GHz, and 2.4GHz).

Here are some screenshots of my 2.4GHz Professional Settings. Maybe try these in IoT Settings ?

Also, not sure how those Brilliance LED's connect... but any chance they are "b" (doubtful) or that these settings are interfering ?

... in addition... curious if you're using AiProtection? I am not, but wonder if it's impacting your devices?

Have you tried lowering the encryption on the IOT network? Please view the attached pic for clarification.

Worth trying ☝️

Mine is working with Wpa2/Wpa3-Personal.

Some other things that come to mind...
  1. Any chance you gave those LED Lights a Fixed IP (within their WebGUI or Mobile App) ?
  2. Parental Controls Off?
  3. Is your Wireless > Roaming Block List Off (if On; any MAC ID's in the list) ?
  4. Check bottom of Screenshot Below: Is your MAC Filter Enabled? (if so Accept or Reject?)
  5. If so, check Wireless Tabs for a "Wireless MAC Filter" Tab and see if your LED Lights are there.
  6. I found in Asus Router Mobile App when clicking Devices (at the bottom) you can "disable" individual clients from connecting (which would then the MAC Filter List where you can re-enable). Poke around that and see if you accidentally disabled those two clients?
  7. As well, in the Mobile App, at the very bottom of that Device List are "offline" devices. Be sure to look at that too and see if the LED Lights ever connected.
  8. Any Firmware Updates for the Brilliance Outdoor LED Lights?

Thanks everyone for all of the suggestions. Will give them a try in the next couple days and hopefully it fixes the issue.

Received the Orbi 970 two pack today and setup it up. The outdoor lights connected right away.

Then hooked up the Asus BQ16 Pro and decided I would setup another IOT network just for the lights and keep that network the same name as the Orbi network. Can you believe that worked? Just baffling to me, but definitely not complaining. Haha.

I did get to test out wireless speeds throughout areas in our house of the Asus BQ 16 Pro compared to the Orbi 970 and they were very similar. Keeping the Asus, since it has a three year warranty and their security software is free. Seems like it has quite a few more settings than Orbi too, however most I will never even know what they do.

One last question. Two of the Asus Ethernet connections are yellow highlighted, saying the port performance can be improved. I tried different Ethernet wires and that did not help. Everything seems to be working fine, so should I just not worry about it?

Thanks!

What are the devices connected to? If those devices are set at or limited to 100/10 Ethernet, that could explain it.

Another question. Guess I keep going. haha.

When it runs a security scan it gives me a 3 Risk. See photo below. I do have port forwarding turned on as need that on for Channels App.

There is no actual question there, but if you're looking for a reccommendation, all off (disabled) is good (at least it is what I do), so disable everything you do not absolutely need. I believe you can try to improve security wrt the port fwd in some other ways, will let others comment.
