Can someone read my syslog and tell me why I keep losing internet?

I updated to the latest AC68U firmware more than a month ago. I started to have issues the last two days. I have no idea how to read this. Can someone pinpoint the problem?

I changed my 5ghz channel from 161 to 148 and that didn’t solve anything. Not that I know if it would. Nothing changed in the house. Same devices, same users. I only use 5ghz although old devices use 2.4ghz.

Good question. When I came home an hour ago, my mother-in-law said we keep losing internet. She said even now there’s no internet. I checked my phone’s wifi and she was right, things were booting up but no one rebooted it manually. Unfortunately, I don’t know the exact times.

I do have it auto reboot everyday at 4AM but that has nothing to do with this I believe. Why would the router started to reboot all of a sudden the last two days.

Yesterday/last evening, I did manually reboot when we lost connection.

I am guessing now that living in South FL in rainy season, the power flickers (it actually did an hour ago which I didn’t notice before), is causing the router to reboot. That’s my guess.

I thought about overheating too but the router is not in a cabinet. And no UPS.

Modem and Router - I have mine on a UPS, along with my NAS box (NAS is set to turn off after 5 mins)..

If you have electrical power issues in the neighborhood, a UPS (which I recommend) will only prevent your router from rebooting. Realize that your ISP neighborhood equipment is probably using the same power grid. So if your lights are flickering causing your router to reboot so is the ISP neighborhood equipment.

There's nothing in those recent log fragments to indicate any problem, unless there were some messages prior to the ones you posted. So I'd say that this looks like an ISP issue. That would be consistent with you saying that this only recently started happening with no changes to your router.

The previous log line was at 5:14AM so no previous log around 5:19/18.

I decided to calll my ISP but everyone is sleeping in the house glad woke up for bathroom to experience the problem first hand

There are some odd messages in that log though; dcd tainted, unexpected fatal signal, ...
I'd do a gui reset on the router (make sure to tick the box to erase all settings) and set it up again from scratch if it was me. Also, leave off any aiProtection stuff to see how it behaves after the new setup. Not sure it's power or ISP related since there doesn't look like there's a reboot in the logs.

(Administration - Restore/Save/Upload Setting - Factory Default (tick initialize all settings) - Black Restore Button). Make sure you have your ISP settings (if any) before the restore. I wouldn't restore from a backup file either.

Here in the UK, my ISP's street cab has battery backup. I know because I work for them!

May have missed it but what type of broadband connection do you have? What ISP/broadband equipment is the Asus router connected to upstream? Another modem or router or gateway? A ONT? Check that upstream device's administration page for logging and see what it indicates for possible issues around the time you are loosing internet. As a troubleshooting step, replace the cable(s) between the Asus router and upstream device. Could be an intermittent line problem up stream causing the outages. Been there, done that with DSL. Flaky occasional internet outages (particularly when it rained) that was only solved after repeated truck rolls, turned out to be a bad card in a cabinet a few streets over.

Like others indicated if you are having power issues throughout the entire house/location then consider investing in a UPS for the router/broadband equipment. They can be purchased for as little as $50 to $60 and can keep the router and ISP equipment powered up and running for a short period of time during a brown out or power loss. Currently running a Cyberpower SX650U UPS that was picked up on sale for $50 from Staples last year.

Agreed, dsl and cable modems are prone to synchronization and other issues that are usually cleared by power cycling the modem. Fiber connections are more stable but any issues will typically require specialized equipment to isolate.
