OMG! I think we have a solution...

"Receive Segment Coalescing" is disabled when Wireshark runs.

Disabling RSC on IPv4 and IPv6 and then a reboot fixes the issue with accessing the router and all the websites I've checked so far are working properly. This works on both 2.1.17 and 2.1.18 of the drivers.

This resolves the issues on both the ASUS XG-XC100C and the Aquantia Aqtion AQN107.

I seem to have a knack for being the only one to experience these problems, but hopefully, if someone else has this problem disabling RSC will solve it.

So it wasn't the ethernet cards but user configuration error? :D

Thanks for the honest update.

What is RSC; a setting in the router? Did you change it from its default?

Or is it a Wireshark setting? In which case was Wireshark running every single time you tried to reboot?

SKIP: seat-keyboard interface problem.

That's harsh :) Would you have thought to disable RSC? Have you seen RSC options even available on typical gigabit NICs?

There are lots of very smart people on this place but RSC was not suggested. I'm a pre-school compared to the guru's here...

Relax, I'm only mildy offended ;)

And this resolves only 1 of the issues.

There still the 12 second connect, 5 minute inactivity link drop and erratic transfer speeds in either direction.

RSC (Receive Segment Coalescing), is a setting specific to some network adapters, not typically on gigabit adapters from what I've read. It aggregates packets so that processing of them is more efficient. In some circumstances resulting in packets that are too large. It's basically the opposite of packet fragmentation. RSC is meant to improve performance whereas packet fragmentation often degrades it.

More often used in server environments, which I guess is still where you would see more 10G adapters than in consumer systems.

That's my layman's interpretation anyway. Anyone who knows this stuff feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

By default the current Aquantia cards drivers have it enabled. It isn't even supported on the 2.1.8 driver version that I have.

For those who build systems from an image the registry settings rscIPv4 and rscIPv6 (DWORD; 0=Disabled) are located at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4d36e972-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0001

Wireshark disables RSC so that there are no inhibitors to traffic flow, which is why the problem went away when I ran Wireshark. The disabled RSC persists until the next restart.

Many thanks. So it wasn’t really.a SKIP.

So many places for things to go wrong, it’s a wonder anything ever works.

SKIP... As in PEBKAC (Problem exists between Keyboard and Chair)? <sigh> For a highly experienced network specialist this might be common knowledge. I'm not such a person. I'm working with Aquantia to see if there are any other driver settings that might resolve the 3 other issues I'm having.

Amendment to the registry key:

Aquantia have confirmed the registry key is not static. The way to automate setting RSC for the adapter is via powershell..

Code:
Set-NetAdapterRsc -Name "MyAdapter" -IPv4Enabled $False -IPv6Enabled $False

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/netadapter/set-netadapterrsc?view=win10-ps

I had the same issue, although in a different setup.

Aquantia 10GbE network card, and cannot access my Asus RT-86U with Merlin Firmware.

The router needed the Merlin Firmware, because the VPN configuration requires in the router the Merlin Firmware.

The router was accessible correctly with the built in Wifi card and Ethernet card of the laptop (Dell Precision 7530), but not through the dock's 10GbE card.

Just plugging in the cable to the Akitio dock resulted in no access to the router.

I have already spent more 3 full days to troubleshoot, with various settings in the router, windows, and so on, when I found by accident this forum page with a Google search.

"Receive Segment Coalescing" = Disabled both for IPv4 and IPv6 solved the issue.
I had already started to check the settings of the network card, but I only got half way through.

The settings can be found at:
Win + X \ Device Manager \ Network adapters \ [Network card] \ Advanced \ Property: Recv Segment Coalescing (IPv4) - Disabled, and Recv Segment Coalescing (IPv6)

The dock is an Akitio Thunder 3 Dock Pro and has a built in 10GbE Ethernet adapter, Aquantia based.
This is one of the main features of this dock, at the time of writing I don't know of any Thunderbolt docks offering a built in 10GbE adapter.

They also have a Thunderbolt 3 based and a PCIe 10GbE network card, which use the same Aquantia drivers.

It sounds a niche thing, but it isn't.
Most studios doing video and photo editing have their local network upgraded to 10GbE, because of the gigantic movie files.

I have the same, I need the 10GbE card to connect to my local NAS, which has a 10GbE port to access the video footage.

See this video from Linus:

First, it was a surprise that the network card of the dock doesn't work plug and play, and needs the drivers installed - it took me already half a day to find out. I would have never guessed that in 2020, a network card still needs drivers to be downloaded.

So it needs the drivers installed for the 10GbE card, and on their download page, they offer the version 2.1.17
Aquantia Microsoft Windows driver v2.1.17 5998 kB Jul 10, 2019

So thanks for listing the solution.
The dock has other issues as well, because of the Thunderbolt 3 connection (mouse and keyboard erratic, audio is distorted, wake from standby is slow, and so on), but at least the network works.

I have this SAME exact issue with the POS Aquantia chip, except it's the standard Asus firmware and not running merlins it's driving me mad. I'm going to try the fix in this post. Disabled the RCV still won't let me connect... sigh
