IMO it is better just to have latest release. The same as Entware guys do.
Yes, it is the version 170221 (latest).
Any chance to get a new Entware version soon? Or you are dependant of Entware guys?
I ask this because openwrt guys seems they added MariaDB to their repository.

I'm still stuck at using PHP5.x on my webserver because the MySQL 5.1 in the openwrt/entware is ancient and not compatible with PHP7+PhpMyAdmin (details here)

I do re-use of Entware guys work. It is their project. This request is known, e.g.

https://github.com/Entware-ng/Entware-ng/issues/222

so we should wait until OpenWRT/LEDE do this upgrade (and then new release of Entware). BTW, MariaDB is still not included to OpenWRT repository:

https://github.com/openwrt/packages/tree/master/utils

I suppose still testing.

yeah, you are right, i have seen also after I written the post here. mariadb was not merged with the openwrt master branch yet.

Good news for those who are using R7800 as a webserver. Zyxmon made a test version for MariaDB:

I like what I see in the printscreen. I will ask him if this also works for ARM7

This is test version for mipsel architecture. zyxmon suggests to add requests for another architectures to the thread of his forum you pointed. I'll try to add this MariaDB into my version.

If I remember well I'm using your special optimized version of entware 3x, not the vanilla one made by zyxmon. So even zyxmon will compile a version for ARM7 I think cannot use it unless I reinstall my entware 3x.
So I prefer to wait for you to add MariaDB to your version.
