What issues have you had with AGH?
The most recent time I've tried AGH was via AMTM on the router, after a firmware update and resetting the fully resetting the router. At the point of installing AGH I lost all internet ability. I spent probably an hour doing everything I could think of to fix it, by which time I'd completely messed up the router and had to perform another full reset!
*My own usage is very much directed at preventing access to malware, I not paranoid about blocking adverts!

Ah ok. I’ve not ran it on my ASUS since getting the Pi4.
Running smoothly there though using DietPi and Unbound.

Thanks for the link earlier. I'm trying the Hagezi Pro (recommended version) for now, but I will try the Ultimate later.

Are you using anything under the allowed list? I'm currently running the following:

Try the Pro++ before jumping to Ultimate.

The Pro lists only contain a partial malware block list but you can add the full one as an additional blocklist.

I’m not whitelisting anything currently, no.

The lists do contain some form of partial whitelisting that stops things from breaking whilst still blocking ads, telemetry etc.

I had the opportunity last night to set up Ad Guard Home - and it's now up and running. So far as I can see there are no problems. It still feels messy to me though.
On Pi-Hole:
  • I like the interface
  • I don't mind sometimes having to use helpers
On Diversion:
  • I like the integration into the existing menus
  • Once set up it's pretty much no fuss
AGH is trying to a lot, it seems to mix things up a bit, it's not always intuitive.

AGH is running, and I'll leave it running at least until the next firmware update - we'll see

Messy in what way? Settings-wise everything is laid out and split nicely into relevant sections. And it supports DOT/DOH/DOQ out of the box without the need for additional software.

I'm not going to get into an argument - Me, personally I really don't like the interface.

I am a pihole person, Only because I went through those extra steps of figuring out the RPI including setting it up, installing pihole, and compiling unbound with all the options I wanted. If all my RPI stopped working today and I had to start all over, I would use Diversion. AdGuardHome is nice, but I would probably try it out on an RPI once I switched back to using RPI. Also, there are still a couple of features I am waiting on AdGuardHome to improve, or add before I am ready to trade out Pihole.

I've switched from pihole to AdGuardHome (AGH) running on my RaspPi. I tried AGH on my router but wasn't happy with the results, I don't think the router is a great place for it.

As we work from home the majority of the time, I've got both a RaspPi running AGH and a VM on a desktop running AGH on Ubuntu Server.

Really, if you use the same blocklists you'll see extremely similar results between PiHole and AGH.

What features would u like to see with AGH and do you think they will be implemented in the future?

One of them is already in the works hopefully.

A couple of other issues relate to bugs in AdGuardHome's existing ipv6 implementation. Pihole doesn't suffer from these issues because they are fortunate to fork DNSMASQ. DNSMASQ has been feature mature for along time. The only thing it lacks is the ability to connect over encryption like AdGuardHome is able to do. For DNSMASQ to send requests via encryption, it has to forward to an additional service like stubby or dnscrypt-proxy.

How are you getting on with the Hagezi List/s ?
Still using the Pro++ without any issues. My avg processing time is down to 2 ms. I might try the Ultimate list eventually but I can't complain so far. Thanks for providing me with this info.

Using Ultimate (and some other lists from Hagezi) I get 2ms processing, 44.1% block rate.

I don't use the AdGuard Parental or Security filters as they were spiking DNS responses into the 500-600ms range, bringing my processing time to over 100ms..!!

The Security filtering is covered in Hagezi's blocklist anyway and the list is far more exhaustive than AdGuard's, and for the Parental filtering I use the OISD NSFW list - think my list tops out somewhere around just over 1 million blocking rules...

While u know my lists would choke a router easily, I know you use AGH on a separate platform(e.g. rpi). You should give my lists a try. For your AGH, you should be able to use the conservative filter files. I block alot of bad stuff. Check it out. https://github.com/jumpsmm7/GeneratedAdblock

Here is an example of just 1 of them:

It goes 0-14 (Basically 15 different links but numbered 0-14) and is about 4.9 million domains.

Looks good. You seem to compile from the same sources that are currently in the list I use :)

I’ll give it a try one day.

Do you whitelist anything at all? If so can you share your list as well. Thanks!
