I'm not running Untangle on the 9850 hardware. I'm running it on an old Centrino laptop. It's that, which works, or an old 11b Linksys router which works (though is slow and disconnects me a lot), or the 9850 which does not work for me. ("Working" being doing the routing stuff and working with port forwarding.) Since EnGenius seems like they do not want to help, would it be possible for someone to send me a config file with port forwarding working or to look at one that I provide and help me figure out why it doesn't work for me?

By the way, did anyone else get a really noisy power adapter? I assume the noise is because it's a switch-mode PSU and it probably has a low switching frequency, and it's probably not an indication of failure, though it's annoying so I used a different power adapter (same voltage and max. current rating, of course).

Tippy -

I finally settled for the ESR9850. Just made an order from Hongkong, so should get it within a week i suspect. The price was dirt cheap and the performance outdid many including WNDR3700 that costs 3 times as much.

I am not too worried about the weak wireless from your reviews since i don't use wireless much if at all.

Tipy i will have to rely on your guidance how to set this router up >:x

Don't worry. Well the wireless isn't that weak but you should have a good experience with the routing and Max-S-Connections. Wireless is stronger if you place the unit in the right location. The AP mode is very strong on the floor it is location then on the main but where the main router is not so strong so 3 floors down.

I've checked with a colleague of mine about Untangle since he uses for his network clients. But he reports the same issues you're having but he doesn't use the ESR9850 and hasn't heard about it, except from me. So what I have gathered from him is that Untangle has some real issues.

What type of noise are you hearing? A Buzzing sound?

Ok thanks for the help.

But you didn't really answer if 9850 can handle 50/50mbps with QoS. Do you know, or haven't you tested the troughput with QoS on?

In an earlier post it is said the throughput is 2-300mbps when QoS is enabled. That just seems like a LOT compared to other routers I have tried so I just want to make sure I am not misunderstanding it.

I don't have 50/50mbps connection 30/5mbps connection. More than enough for my needs. This router Qos is disabled and Hardware Network Engine is active for better through-put and faster speeds over the LAN to LAN to WAN to LAN. Even with QoS off I don't suffer from heavy downloads drags on the network nor do I have issues with Media A/V streaming at the same time or gaming off FaceBook over the 802.11g or 802.11n. I can be on the wife can be on and downloading and streaming at the same time. Backup huge images of 50GB or more that's another story, but of course I won't be doing the above at the same time. I usually do a 50 to 160GB backup on off-peak hours.

The only time I ran QoS is on Belkin N+, DIR-655 and TEW-673GRU. I don't run it on ESR9850. For QoS and gaming then get the ESR9855 since that has QoS Stream Engine hardware, more RAM and the WNPU is 475MHz.

What issues does he report with Untangle? I've been using it for maybe 1.5 years now and I think it's great. Only downside is that it draws more power than a consumer router. The server I had running it had a hardware failure but I decided to use an old Centrino laptop instead.

I can't really describe the sound as I've already got it boxed up for return to Newegg. I don't really remember what it sounded like. But it was definitely noisy.

The issues you posted in this thread when using ESR9850. I didn't even mention what issues you had said to him. Then he pretty much said the same that you said except router.

So if you don't use Untangle system does the ESR9850 work okay with you? Have you ever use SNORT? (http://www.snort.org/) I've use it but not with this router. These extra defenses are better for clients of small to large scale business then there is a web filter network device which would better serve corporate or enterprise environment like Blue Coat.

Anyway ESR9850 basic router with extra features to make is like a sup-up Ford Festa with Turbo Motor instead of the stock engine.

I was using Untangle or ESR9850, not both together. I am using Untangle in router mode, not in firewall/transparent mode. I will say that I've never heard of issues port forwarding with it, though your reply may be that I am the only case you've heard of with port forwarding issues with the ESR9850. I am not perfect and so I will not say that it definitely wasn't user-error, though I just don't need the thing now anyway. And even if it is user error, the noisy power supply would still justify a return.

True on the PSU, if faulty then return the unit. Yes, about the port forwarding issue with ES9850 with you only so far.

Should i update the firmware when i receive it?

I want to use the ESR-9850 to wireless to my DIR-655 1 floor directly above me. How do i set it up like that :/ ?

Floor 1 - ESR-9850 + my pc + my NAS

Before you update anything check to see what you get first? If not 1.10 then update the firmware.

See this image, it's two DIR-655 one is the main DHCP Router the second is the AP (wireless access point)

The ESR9850 you leave it alone or set it up for your ISP connection? The DIR-655 would need to be set to disable the DHCP server, NAT, SPI.

Internet > Fiber optic modem (ftth) > DIR-615 (configured as switch vlan porting) > ESR9850 >

- WIRED to pc1 (floor1)

- wireless to DIR-655 > wired to pc2 (floor2)

The esr9850 need to setup the isp connection details. The dir-615 using for vlan tagging only. Refer to this custom router page for what i mean because my isp made it hard to use our own router.

Oh that's right you had sent me that link showing that your ISP uses DIR-615. That's using the stock firmware right or is it mod firmware?

well it's friggin ridiculous actually.

It's a custom dir-615 firmware that has a hidden 2nd admin account. Easy to hack into and steal your bandwidth and turn your devices into bots :[

There 2 vlan ports configured, 1 for internet, the other for iptv.

If you don't need gigabit and need 5 GHz, the ESR 7750 isn't too shabby. Tippy you rock, keep going!

Just get ESR-9850 more than enough for what you need. Price is dirt cheap, and that's how this company wants to be more affordable buy yet give you a router that can peform very well. Now if you need more Qos/Gaming then you should consider the ESR-9855 cost $50 bucks more. ESR-9850 is $50 bucks less. Around $50 with free shipping. Just have to look for the vendor online.

Don't worry so much about DD-WRT when the stock firmware from Senao (EnGenius) is more than enough since it already tweaked out of the box. I use do download heavy not anymore. This router have thrown everything I could think at it and it still can take it the beating on it. I would like a few changes to the firmware, but the System Engineer at Senao won't change the firmware, but it's okay I understand why they won't. I have both of these routers one AP the other DHCP main running neck to neck. I've even check for overheating nope not even warm. They are bright though with the lights flashing on them so be warned.

Well like say everything works for now, I just did a full back from a wireless laptop using those mini N150 to gig server wasn't that bad I thought. Don't forget to check out the site forum I made, http://tipstir.the-talk.net

New Firmware (V1.1.2.94_20100521) was released on 6/10/10 for this router. I got it installed on both ESR-9850. Seems less sluggish then prior 1.10 after heavy packet usage.

Well this router in AP peeked at -41dBm on the wireless side.
