Trying to find other reasons than simply starting at the basics (the cable, particularly when your tests show it as a variable) is just going on a wild goose chase.

The 'technical specs' in Post 16 above aren't 100% accurate either. I'm running at 2.5GbE speeds with Cat5e cable over a 100' run.

Quality always trumps over the 'newest standard'.

Another point that is being missed; while the internal network may be happy with the Cat8, the modem isn't. Nothing to do here but get better cables.

Amazon reviews are hardly worth the stars they indicate.

You can also try a 'dumb' switch between the modem and the router (it has fixed issues for many here).
The issue is the modem is accepting a Cat8 cable but not longer that 1 foot. What’s funny is I just realized my brother had the same issues with his Cat8 cables so I gave him my Cat5e. He was getting drops. As for quality I always research quality brands. I didn’t buy cheap cables. I just got them cheap because a short sale. The reviews were tech sites and specific to i.t.. The cables I purchased actually ended up being exactly what someone here recommended.

since there’s another variable added with a similar modem having issues I’m wondering if they just don’t work well with cat8 cables. He’s had 0 issues since switching but he’s also running under a gig. I’m running over a gig.

What I’m going to try is a 3 foot cat6e cable running to the modem. I’m stuck with cat8 everywhere else. They seem to be running fine on the other jacks. Seems like that’s my best shot to fix this.

I'm also running 2.5GbE over Cat5e @ 100', but not to the ONT. The internal network only.

Don't underestimate the compatibility issues that new 'standards' bring. At least in some cases. And not just for the 'wire' technology, but also for the connectors too. Doesn't help if the wire is to spec, but the connectors aren't.

A Cat6a cable (there is no Cat6e, afaik), may work too of course. But buy both Cat5e and Cat6a and return whatever doesn't work for your specific equipment.

You're placing too much emphasis on the cable type for the distance you need it for. The specs usually only help for the longest run possible, not the short runs you need.

So I got my Cat6a cable in today. Same exact issue. I did a full power cycle of the modem & router. Cat6 was putting out exactly the same low speeds as my Cat8 cables. Plugged in the 1 foot Cat8 and speeds returned immediately.

it’s like the Ethernet plug is having issues sending signals beyond a 1 foot Ethernet cable. It’s to many cables for it to not be the modem (nighthawk 2050). Any thoughts?

Maybe defective ethernet ports or a defective modem itself?
