Feature Request - Neighbourhood Access with Bandwidth Limitation

  • SNBForums Code of Conduct

    SNBForums is a community for everyone, no matter what their level of experience.

    Please be tolerant and patient of others, especially newcomers. We are all here to share and learn!

    The rules are simple: Be patient, be nice, be helpful or be gone!

This is common practice nowadays in Europe. Not from ISP's but from the owners of copyrighted material, particularly porn movies.

There are a few notorious legal firms that monitor torrent activity and collect the IP addresses of those downloading their "movies". They then get a court order to force the ISP's to reveal the names and addresses of the account holders. They then send out letters demanding money or threatening court action.
Canadian laws are actually doing a good job at stopping Copyright trolls. Read up on the Notice & Notice system that's in place here, as well as the maximum amount an infringer could be held responsible for (it's kept low enough to discourage copyright trolls).

The difference to providing free neighborhood WiFi is that what everyone else is doing is seen as what you're doing. Not the same thing.

Net anonymity is an imaginary animal. But it does roll nicely off the tongue. ;)

Net anonymity isn't
I think an inexpensive VPN is the solution here, then short of the most exigent circumstances you'll be well protected. And why NOT protect yourself? I got 3-years of VPN Unlimited for $19. Not the best but not bad..

I thought I got a pretty good deal with a 50% coupon from TorGuard reddit, but it wasn't $19 - you found a great deal! :) Mind you I was looking for dedicated IP, and I think that pricing was very competitive.

I'd really like to share Wifi with my neighbours, but I'd like to do so with some limitations. I'd like to see:

1) some standard (think coffee shop) agreement tick box agreement you're forced to agree to;;
2) ability to limit QOS for Neighbours;
3) ability to limit total monthly GB Bandwidth (for those of us not on unlimited plans);
4) ability to set time limits per use (ie. you could cut someone off after an hour of connection.

If enough people shared bandwidth, it could help build more anonymity into the web, and I frankly think sharing with my neighbourhood would be great!

XFinity (Comcast) does this by default on their CM/Residential gateways unless folks opt-out - hasn't been a rousing success if one reads up on things...

You might consider FON, and picking up one of their AP's - they do all the heavy lifting, and you get paid, and can access other FON spots...

The take away here is that third parties - they have done all the legal stuff to protect you against things, and they've also done the heavy stuff to protect your network if you want to share your AP...
