Hi!
Owner of 87U here too.
Just saw this, thanks for your time and effort to prolong our (beloved) devices life.

I don't use VPN myself, is there any other fix/upgrade in v202106 vs Merlin v384.13 besides that one?
Just to know if it makes sense flashing or not.

Regards!

I know for sure that the fork has an updated dnsmasq that solve dnssec vulnerability, which is critical. Apart from that, I believe there are updates to few other packages and the OP can give you more details...

It has:
Updated dnsmasq to 2.83 <-- important since 384.13_10 version has security issues mainly with dnssec.
Updated openvpn to 2.5.2
Updated curl to 7.72.0
Updated CA bundle to 20210605
Updated dropbear to 2020.81
Updated openssl to 1.1.1k
From what i can see at the moment on the github page.

May I ask where did you get than from? Before asking here I searched for changelogs but only found one under Wiki section and was Merlin's one. I'm not to familiar with github's layout (obviously :p).
Just trying to learn so not to ask again what I can look for myself.
Regards and thanks once again for your reply!

To me, AC87U works very well with this build. I tried DD-WRT and the stock firmware and ended up with this fork.

DD-WRT has 5 GHz issues as Quantenna (for 5 GHz) is closed source and we can't even set the mode, channel, etc. So, no go for me!

I had buffering issues on Bloomberg TV on the stock firmware and no such issues with this fork, fwiw!

I see these messages a lot... Any ideas what it's complaining about?

So I've blown 202106 into my 87u and it seems okay, except the uptime is too short (at a bit over a day) and I have the reboot scheduler disabled (see below for more, note "dnsmasq" makes an appearance). I'm not getting either of the messages people have commented on. There are some topology change messages I'm not entirely sure about but aren't scaring me. I hope it's okay as I don't know the people involved and haven't spent the time to go through it looking for changes, so am trusting for the best for now, as this is a pretty solid community.

Here's the log around the reboot, I installed the fw on the 7th and it ran okay up to here:

It's been more than a year since ArchPhoenix release (384.13_202106). So, I take it that the updates are dead on this router?

Can't believe Asus dropped the ball on this router after their stupid selection of antenna for this router. OTOH, they are still supporting old routers like AC-68U. Just unbelievable! smh

EDIT: I don't know why I was expecting ASUS to support their own router when you have DD-WRT where they update almost 2 or 3 times a week. Flashed DD-WRT v3.0-r49139 std (06/10/22) and has all the security features that you need and couldn't be more happier. Adios ASUS!

Hi!

What could you say about newest DD-WRT? Don't you miss Merlin's goodies? I know I'm now very exposed security wise, but I don't imagine myself using other fw after so many years...

Not dropped, but won't be as regular as Merlin. If there isn't a blocking issue for us, we won't update it.

I just updated 30 minutes ago. Works very well. I checked the logs and the openvpn connection. No problem!

I did not drop this, even if it goes slower that what I wished.
For me it is important that with this update, if I am not wrong, the security issues for AC87U router are fixed. Other feature updates would be also nice, but are not as important as security issues.

I got RT-AC87U tried Merlin but it's old and entware can't be installed, would be great with some updates :)

Getting from fwupdate.asuswrt-merlin.net
! Module entware_setup.mod download failed
! using fallback server diversion.ch
! Module entware_setup.mod download failed

I tried to disable 2.4 and 5ghz wifi because I use external but I think there is a but where 5ghz is not turned off I see temps for 5ghz

2.4 - 5 - cpu
disabled - 57 °C - 82 °C

Is this fork still being maintainted in Oct 2023?

I've updated to latest asus 2021 firmware release to get security updates.

I'm looking for best wifi threwput on 87u router. It is being use only as Access Point.

I wish Merlin would take latest asus base firmware released in 2021 and updated this router. hehe

Is there access point under $80 that i can buy that can give me 1GB threwput on wifi card?

Should i stay on stock?
