Does this version not allow renaming the client names? Not completely sure if that's what the notes are saying.
I'm on Merlin 380.57 now and can, and that feature is fairly important to me.

You can specify DNS hostnames (LAN - DHCP Server) just like in Merlin. But you cannot specify client names because such a concept doesn't exist in John's firmware.

Do you really need client names rather than DNS names? Client names don't exist outside of the router's Network Map function.
Yes, client names. Under "clients", when you click "view list", the names under client names is often cryptic, so it's helpful to rename them once you figure out what they are.

Yes but you can use LAN > DHCP Server > Manual Assignment to give those clients a meaningful host name. So something like "android32a6ef05" becomes "colins-kindle". So you don't need client names and host names because you can just use host names for everything.

As @ColinTaylor mentioned, you can assign a new name while setting a fixed ip under the LAN DHCP settings....

If you don't want to assign a fixed ip, you can make a /jffs/configs/dnsmasq.conf.add file with one line for each client you want to rename
dhcp-host=macid, newhostname

I always thought that client names as a separate entity from ddns names was an unnecessary confusion.

Indeed. It seems an unnecessary duplication. The only thing client names give you over host names is the ability to include non-alphanumeric characters. For example "colins kindle" rather than "colins-kindle". Given that host names exist in DNS and can therefore be used anywhere on the LAN they are more preferable than client names IMHO.

I have an ASUS RT-N66U running Merlin Fork 374.43_2-20E9j9527. I would like to update to 50E8.

I read the installation notes, but am still a bit confused.

Do I need to use the ASUS Firmware Restoration Tool? Should I do a factory reset prior to updating and clear the NVRAM after updating?

Appreciate any help.

Flash the firmware, then reset the router to factory defaults if needed.

Hi there John! Question: Does the fork support OpenVPN for the RT-N16? I think I read that it wasn't supported in this model. Or do I need to install something? Also, I have 374.43_44E5j9527 I think just like Jedi Knight I would have to reset to factory, reconfigure by hand, and reformat the JFFS? Or can I just do a dirty upgrade? Thanks!
Update: Answered my first question. No OpenVPN for the RT-N16, hardware is too old...

Also with that big a jump, you will definitely need to reformat jffs after the update.
I went dirty from 42 to 50 and got burned for not backing up my jffs and needed to reformat it.... sigh

Other than PEBKAC not backing up jffs, upgrade with reformat of jffs and A1 as usual!

Don't know of anything that should have broken repeater mode. I don't have an AC56,, but I'll hook up an AC68 and check it later this week.
What are you using as the parent for the repeater?

Anybody else using an AC56 as a repeater?

The 56U works fine as mediabridge but not asRepeater. The 56u dosnt seem to connect to the primary router in repeatermode but as mediabridge it gets connected. My 66u b1 works fine in repeater mode on merlin

Hi guys, my router (RT-AC66U, router mode, minimal config, john's fork ver. 50E8) just rebooted itself :(

The spontaneous reboots on AC66U started with 48Exx. Looks like you found the other thread with the ongoing debugging discussion.
