New Around Here
Hello Folks,
Can I simply upgrade my stock firmware 384 installing stable merlin 380?Router is new and i don't know if it is better installing older stock firmware before.
Thanks

If u are basic user... sticking to the new stock firmware is fine. The Merlin is still a beta firmware with some bug on and off. If u are adventurous and want extra features like ad block, better firewall etc.. then hop on to the Merlin asuswrt wagon. But don’t complain u having lots of bug coz u are expected to help in debug. Haha..

Thanks for you answer!:) I need of Merlin for configuring my Openvpn client (IPVanish doesn't work with stock firmware), my doubt is about the change from a newer fw (384) to an older (380). Can I have some issues?Readme file tells about problem on my router with FW older than 378 but it does not say nothing about FW newer than 380...

Incorrect. The 380.69 firmware is not Beta, and the 382.xx branch is only officially marked Beta for selected models.

P.S. Personally I find your attitude/comment quite disgusting.

ASUS RT-AC56U F/W: 380.62_1

Release was a long time ago.

Ahh the dreaded debate about if it is good practice to even include such info in a signature!. :p

Actually my RT-AC56U is a test router and flips between Official Asus firmware and any variation of available newer firmwares for testing, so I got lazy in keeping track on the forum (like anyone would care or even notice! ;))

However, one of my relatives is still on 380.66_6 but easily has uptime periods of >150 days and refuses to let me upgrade it in case it reduces his stable connection despite my concerns about security patches.

I'm proud to see a lot of signatures mentioning my scripts. So I occasionally let my eyes wander below the musings, predicaments or findings of members.

I removed my routers for the same reason, I jump back as far as 380.59 with my test routers to see if my script-checks work.

Apology for my comment, I misread the version. Yes 380.69 is stable. And 382 is beta for selected models.

I shouldn’t use the word complain. But telling them to be patient instead. I am just trying to user that using beta firmware like 382 will be expecting bugs here and there. If they need stable firmware, then better off to stick to 384 official since lots of improvement from what I saw in other threads.

Don’t think there will be any issue. Just that you may need to manually reconfigure the setting as there is major changes in its scripting. Better also to do a reboot, flash firmware and follow by factory reset to manually reconfigure the setting
