goCoax MoCA 2.5 adapter

I just setup 3 GoCoax Moca 2.5 ethernet adapters. I've got it all configured after many adjustments and headaches with them not wanting to talk to each other. I ended up using WPS security on all of them because I was running into an issue with my Xfinity XB7 modem/router. The XB7 router runs on MoCA 2.0, but it would send the internet traffic through Moca and reach the GoCoax adapters. I was ok with that until i noticed that the XB7 would cap my bandwidth to about 500mb/s of my 1GBit connection when getting internet through the Moca network.

Here is why i enabled security... I wanted to bypass not receiving internet from XB7 via Moca, but only to receive it via Ethernet from the modem to the GoCoax adapter. Thats where the security enabled WPS on each GoCoax device helped to keep things sorted since i had no other use to use other MoCA devices except for the GoCoax to talk with each other to receive ISP connection from the XB7 modem going into one of the GOCoax via ethernet and then distributing the ISP connection to all existing GoCoax devices on the MoCa network.

So how did that work for me? It worked great until it didn't work :( .. I've come to agreement that the XB7 still interferes somehow with the GoCoax adapters. I've noticed that if i disconnect the modem completely from the coax (no internet); the GoCoax devices behave accordingly. But, once i plug the XB7 modem back to get internet the GoCoax adapters become unstable.
*The longest uptime the GoCoax were stable in their connections was up to 1.5 days. Then I had to reboot each one of the GoCoax adapters to start working again.

The splitter from outside where the main comcast comes in with all the splits going to the destinations in the house has a POE filter along with a splitter that handles 5mhz-2.4Ghz


My concern is that the XB7 may be creating these issues and wondering if i need to adjust frequency band of the GoCoax to not get interference from the XB7.

Any guidance would be helpful so that i have consistency in my network. When it works, i get solid 3200-3500 in the PHY chart and my internet bandwidth reaches close to 940mbs download and 40mbs upload.

Any reason you haven't just disabled MoCA on the XB7? Do you have other MoCA nodes besides the goCoax adapters? If not, you could also consider installing a MoCA filter on its input. What frequencies is the XB7 using for its Internet upstream/downstream connections?

So apparently comcast will not let you disable the MoCa from the XB7. They said they do not support troubleshooting of anything related to MoCa.
There is a place within the Admin of the modem/router settings to disable, but once you disable it, it comes back on automatically. The XB7 frequency is on D1 (1150 MHz). There is no way to change its frequency either. So, the only other MoCa devices I can think of is the 2 - X1 TV boxes we use in separate rooms. I have tested to see if they were conflicting, but that wasn't the case when i was troubleshooting. It was the XB7 most definitely that was causing the issues.

My next step is to try your MoCa filter option to add to the input of the XB7. I have a couple of those i can work with :)

If the filter doesn't work, do you think adjusting the frequencies on the GoCoax MoCa's would help? The GoCoax are set to its default LOF 1150

Speculative: I'd think shifting the goCoax adapters to the upper frequency range, plus enabling MoCA privacy for the goCoax adapters, may help avoid the conflicts with the XB7, while allowing the XB7 to continue to function as the MoCA bridge for the X1 set-tops.

Yes, our products can support this. Our device can support MoCA D-band low, D-band high and D-band extend three configurations. By default, we enable all of them. It will setup a 5-channels connection, from 1125MHz to 1625MHz. We know that, many MSO use D-band low 1125MHz to 1225MHz to act as MoCA WAN. You can change our device to use D-band high only, from 1350MHz to 1675MHz, can build a 3-channels connection.​
You need to set your IP address manually to 192.168.254.1, subnet 255.255.255.0 because the adapter does not have DHCP server. Set your IP manually and the web admin page will load. The default IP of the device is 192.168.254.254. username is admin, password is gocoax. You can change the default password as you want.​


edit: p.s. As a late aside, I just came across a /r/HomeNetworking post over on reddit revealing what appears to be a Frontier-branded goCoax MoCA 2.5 adapter ...

... that, per the user, has a physical switch for setting the operational frequency range for the MoCA adapter, to allow for simple configuration between D-Low, D-High and full Extended Band D.
They are kind of different than the goCoax. They don't have a TV port for it. Instead there is switch for WAN, FULL, LAN where the TV coax port would be on the goCoax. Pretty cool that it can switch between wan and lan.
So my assumption is that the switch settings correspond to:
  • WAN = MoCA Band D-Low (1 channel only)
  • LAN = MoCA Band D-High (3 channels max)
  • FULL = "full" Extended Band D (5 channels)
... per the above goCoax support page FAQ entry.

Yes - just change default IP addresses on the GoCoax adapters to match your local LAN for easier access...

How exactly should IPs be setup on GoCoax nodes to avoid any network issues? e.g. I have 5 GoCoax nodes I setup a few days ago (set encryption, but left IP as default). Goal is to access each one on the network without changing PC IP and having to direct connect to it.

Can I set DHCP on each node and let my router (using eero) assign IPs to each one? And then assign static IPs in the router config?

Or should I assign them as static in the GoCoax portal?

Everything is working now, so I don’t want to mess it up. However, I want an easy way to check status of each node and be able to upgrade firmware without having to physically interact with each one.

Either should work but Reserved DHCP addresses would be more manageable, right?

Yes, I'd like reserved, but want to make sure that if the devices now have an IP address assigned on my network, that it won't impact their ability to delivering the connected network backbone for some reason. It's working REALLY well right now and don't want to degrade the experience for some unknown reason.
 
It won't. Leaving DHCP *on* and doing static reservations is best practice here.

I just did a home office installation with three GoCoax adapters for a customer via this method and all worked flawlessly. Just make sure you have solid RG6 in the walls and good quality splitters, with amplification if the runs are long enough, and all should be rock solid.

So you're saying I *should* have done this and not left as the default 192.168.254.254.

Is there a way to change this on each node without directly plugging into each one physically?
 
I just purchased two of these. I have RG6 in my house that runs from each room to a central splitter outside. I disconnected the two that goto the two rooms I want to connect and connected them with a Coax coupler. I don't know exactly how the cables are routed through the house but I'm guessing its under 100ft. So the gocoax pair is basically directly connected together via RG6 on the moca connector. There is nothing on the Tv connector.

PHY rates show around 3500
As a test, the ethernet goes directly from my laptop, to the gocoax mocas, to my router. I tried transfering a file between my laptop and a computer directly connected on the router and my speed is only around 240 Mbps. If I tried the exact same test via wifi, I can get 480 Mbps. (My wifi access point is connect to another port on my router.)

Instead of using my laptop, I tried connecting to another laptop and got the same results.

I'm not sure what else to try here. Is there anything to tweak in the configuration to get better speeds?

The phy rate looks right.
Try using iperf with parallel streams instead of file tranfer. The exact command is mentioned in several of the threads here. Should pop up in a search for iperf here.

Yes, I did see that when I read the thread. However, I also read comments that it is not a realistic way to measure speed since not all connections are parallel. In the end, this will be mostly be used for file transfers and streaming video. I did not mention it in my original post, but I did try transferring multiple files at once. The total speed never changed. Two files would go at approx 15MB/s, three files was around 9MB/s.

Curious that the iPerf results match your file transfer results. Makes me wonder about your Ethernet NICs on the source/target sides of the test, given the PHY rates look good.

Well the "target" NIC is the same for both tests and connects through my ER-X router (which has the WIFI AP connect to it so that can't be the bottleneck.
I tried connecting the laptop directly into the router and here is what I get:
