Hi all, this is my first post here, but I've been reviewing the forum and utilizing the resources for some time. Thanks to all contributors.

I recently moved and purchased a GT-AX11000 Pro (new) and Verizon Fios 1 Gig for the new address. I upgraded from the Fios CR1000A, which I was using at my previous address. The purpose of my upgrade was to achieve an Open Nat on two Xbox consoles (Series X and Series S) when playing online simultaneously. A recent firmware update on the CR1000A put both consoles in Moderate Nat and could not be changed to Open Nat via settings (spent hours, not possible, even port forwarding not working to Open Nat on one console, and of course, Verizon has no resolutions). It rendered online gaming impossible on the two consoles, so I decided to buy the GT-AX11000 Pro to mitigate the issue.

Since booting up the GT-AX11000 Pro, my network has been very problematic. I suspected that it was the Verizon hook-up at the new address. So, over the past month and a half, Verizon techs have been at my address and have replaced and tested every single component of the network up to the router. I have all new and tested cat6 ethernet cables inside. I even have 250 feet of new cable running from the poles outside. They have replaced everything, in some instances twice (ONT).

Despite Verizon's repairs, my network is still extremely buggy. Devices dropping and reconnecting, latency issues, speed issues, router settings ineffective, you name it. The biggest issue is the ax11000 Pro linking at 10 Mbps on every reboot. I have factory reset the router four times: two times through the GUI and two times manually. I have tried stock firmware and Merlin Firmware. I have followed L&LD's guides to the T. The same issues persist.

I have been in touch with ASUS, they issued an RMA for the device. So, that's happening.

One of the settings that wasn't working for me as intended was the Upnp. As I mentioned, I purchased this router specifically to get an Open Nat on both Xbox consoles when playing online simultaneously. Each console is wired to the router via new cat6. However, on stock firmware (3006.10234721), I could not consistently keep Open Nat on both consoles. On Merlin firmware (3004.388.8_2), I could keep Open Nat, but we still had issues online. Specifically, the two consoles would not play nicely together in the same lobby. Sometimes the two consoles could not join the same lobby but could play in separate lobbies with other online players. Sometimes one console would be relegated to a "Solo" public lobby, where it could not join a lobby with any other players. Sometimes, the consoles were able to join the same lobby together but when playing together would experience unplayable lag. Sometimes the lag was only on one console, sometimes both. Furthermore, if any player separate from our network joined our lobby, they would experience lag when near either one of our characters. A real head-scratcher.

When attempting to troubleshoot these issues, I learned that this model router does not support a Full Cone Nat Type option, but instead uses a Port Restricted Cone Nat Type. Some resources I have found say Port Restricted should still allow seamless online gameplay. Other resources say it can cause issues.

So, here's my question. When I get the replacement from ASUS, should I expect that as long as it is a working unit, the Upnp should work and I will be able to enjoy seamless online gaming on two Xbox consoles simultaneously? Or, because this device does not support Full Cone Nat, even if the device is working, I will not be able to get the two Xbox consoles to play online together? Will I have different experiences depending on which firmware I use?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
 
the only thing i can suggest that isnt mentioned in your post for the xboxs.

navigate to alternative port selection and set each console to different ports.
settings - general - network settings - advanced settings - alternative port selection

keep Upnp enabled with no manual port forwarding on the asus router.
 
Yes you are right, choosing an alternate port in the Xbox network settings is a good troubleshooting step for Open Nat and has worked for me on other devices. Unfortunately, that has not made a difference for this router.

I don’t believe I’m dealing with a reliable device in any sense of the word at the moment. So, I’m not too concerned with getting the existing device working as it is being RMA’d. Instead I’m wondering whether or not I should expect a working replacement ax11000 Pro to allow the two Xbox’s to play together online without issue.

I wonder if RMerlin has any knowledge on this? One of his posts is how I learned that the ax11000 Pro does not offer Full Cone Nat.

Hi RMerlin, I appreciate you taking a look. Maybe you’ll have insight on this specific scenario outside of online gaming.

I’m playing a game that is hosted via a hybrid P2P/dedicated server connection. But it relies heavily on P2P. I haven’t had the same issues on games with solely dedicated servers.

Therefore, do you know if the Nat Type configuration on my GT-AX11000 Pro will allow seamless P2P connection with Upnp enabled? Should multiple clients on my network be able to access the same P2P network simultaneously? Would there be a difference using your FW?

I have no idea how that P2P is implemented, so I don`t know.

Asuswrt-Merlin won`t provide any change over stock firmware there, unless you need to use IPv6 pin holing, which is fairly uncommon.

Ok, I understand. It’s GTA Online, but I personally don’t know the specifics of their implementation.

So just to confirm, Nat and Upnp will function the same between the stock firmware and Asuswrt-Merlin?

upnp does not "open nat" it allows the console to forward ports, and this is not generally needed for connecting to a remotely hosted service unless it wants to query your client ping using legacy butt backwards methods from the 2000's.

You're not being booted from the lobby due to the nat type or some sort of port collision, but because the lobby doesn't allow duplicate connections from the same IP

This is a long running service issue going back to the 2016.

only relevant to Xbox service multiplayer, GTA Online isn't.

I have the same router (running for the most part at default settings) & 3 xboxs (2 wireless) connected at the same time with Open NAT showing on all. This may be an issue with Verizon modem. I dont use IVP6 and have Xfinity as my ISP using own modem as well. What modem are you currently using?

As I mentionned, Asuswrt-Merlin adds IPv6 pin hole support to the IGD.

This is interesting and is the first time I’ve heard this.

Could you help me understand why this isn’t happening in all scenarios? My brother has Xfinity 500 mbps service and an Xfinity router. He has Upnp enabled, it achieves “Open Nat” status on both consoles and allows them to be in the same GTA lobby simultaneously with no issue.

Why would there be a difference?

Ok, I’m glad to hear that a working model is able to provide this functionality. I have the same exact settings enabled, however I’m not getting the same results consistently (as described in OP). This could be a faulty device issue, and as mentioned before, this device is being RMA’d.

However, I don’t want to ignore the possibility of this specific issue being an ISP problem. Verizon does not provide a modem for fiber, but instead an ONT.

Ok, I’m glad to hear that a working model is able to provide this functionality. I have the same exact settings enabled, however I’m not getting the same results consistently (as described in OP). This could be a faulty device issue, and as mentioned before, this device is being RMA’d.

If you temporarily remove the Asus device out of the equation, do you you still have issues with your WiFi and/or Xbox still showing Moderate NAT?

I'm not sure if this might be possible with the G-211M-C as I'm not familiar with them or if you need a separate device.

The GT-AX11000 Pro is the only device connected to the ONT.

When I plug my Xbox ethernet directly into the ONT (bypassing the router) I’m getting “Open Nat” on the console. Under detailed statistics it says “your network is not behind a NAT.”

Another thing I’m noticing is that my speeds are different when plugged directly into the ONT.
- When going ethernet through the router I get 1000 mbps down and 200 mbps up.
- When going directly into the ONT from the Xbox I get 1150 mbps down and 800 mbps up. Which are the speeds I would expect.
 
set sip alg to disabled on the AX11000 Pro if it isn't already
upnp should be enabled on the router, and the xbox should not mention a upnp failure on Profile & system > Settings > General > Network settings.

Enable UPnP IGD & PCP/NAT-PMP: on
Enable secure UPnP IGD mode: on

disable instant-on on the xbox.
All good items to check. Assuming the sip alg is the WAN->NAT Passthrough->SIP Passthrough ->Disabled, then all settings are confirmed.

It was surprising to me when RMerlin said there are no differences between the firmware for my specific issue because I am getting different results.

The main issue now is that I am still experiencing inconsistency in the ability of both Xbox consoles to play together in GTA Online. Rarely, we are able to get the two accounts to join the same lobby. When we do, there is unplayable lag for one or both. When other friends outside of our network join the same lobby, there is terrible lag for them as well. When friends play without us, they do not experience the lag and regular gameplay resumes. Some friends have multiple consoles on one network and are able to play GTA Online in the same lobbies with no issues.

I have been playing GTA since 2013. Over the past 3 years, our household has played it on a consistent basis with multiple Xbox consoles, in the same lobby, simultaneously. This all changed with the update to the Fios router, but before then there were no issues.

I forgot to mention I also had to put static IP addresses on both Xbox consoles (via LAN->DHCP Server->Manually Assigned IP) in order to get the Open Nat to stay consistent.
