Hey all.

I see nowhere that RT-BE92U are going to be supported by Merlin at some point. Has it "wrong" CPU, so it will not be supported in the future?
I know what routers are supported today.
And generally which BE routers *might* be supported in the future - regarding CPU.

Regards

Newer buy a new router if you plan to "upgrade" it with Merlin FW without checking which models are supported at THAT EXACT TIME.

2 reasons:

1. You get Asus Merlin support already on your way to the store getting it.
2. The forum won't get flooded with such questions.

I fall in the category of folks who doesn't buy "high-end" Asus routers, if they are overkill in specs for my need/want (only because Merlin already supports it).

Which is why I had to forego the BE98Pro or the BE96 (or BQ16) - they are way too much overkill and therefore a waste of money for my needs. They are also too ugly to be placed in any leaving room - only meant for basements, in my view.

Therefore I chose to go for the Asus BT10 single pack, as my main router - has 4x4 5 GHz and single band of 4x4 6 GHz bands - exactly what I needed and wanted.

I also was careful to have the 2 GB RAM and 256 MB flash that the BT10 has - as that helps Merlin adopt it in his stable. The BT10 is also available all across world - US/Canada, UK/EU, and Asia - helping broaden the appeal/help to a lot of people if Merlin adopts it. All of these are philosophies that Merlin has outlined as his rationale for adoption.

Thankfully, the wireless has been rock-solid since the Nov 6/24 Asus update, which further bolsters the case for adoption, I hope !

(The only deficiency of the BT10, which will apparently also have AFC support from Asus in early 2025 - is the the lack of ethernet ports, which was easily fixed with a $ 6 unmanaged gigabit switch for connecting the TV, etc that don't need 2.5 Gbps or 10 Gbps ethernet).

The BT10 is also available all across world - US/Canada

I'm sorry, but in Canada it's "available" only at Asus Store and for CAD1200 for 2-pack... I personally won't recommend this model to anyone at this price point even if it has vertical takeoff built-in with automatic landing in best Wi-Fi spot location, SpaceX style. I would rather go to Ubiquiti Store for UCG-Max gateway with 2x U7 Pro access points for under CAD800 for better Qualcomm based Wi-Fi system with more advanced (and working now) features.

In my opinion your chances for Asuswrt-Merlin support are very slim.

Thankfully you are not Merlin. Only just a poster in an online forum - with free sarcasm and editorializing of other's posts at your will. For which you got warned about your presence in this forum, repeatedly.

2-pack in US costs about US $ 800. It has all features working. Merlin would be a great addition. That's all.

I believe you are the only one with ZenWiFi BT10 at the moment on SNB Forums. I may have missed someone else. One of the requirements for Asuswrt-Merlin support is popular model. This model doesn't meet this requirement at the moment. In Canada it's not even available yet at major retailers. The price in the US is about the same in USD. About 3006 code current situation you can read here, RMerlin comment:

Based on the above - don't expect 3006 model support expansion any time soon. This is the reality. You can blame me for it, no problem.

Thanks to all above I will wait until sometime next year. (Living in Denmark, I can see that here is low priority for now). Some models that can be bought in US can't be bought here yet.

Regards

Living in Denmark

Whatever becomes available in your country will be quite different than US models as well. The 2.4GHz band will be restricted to 100mW, 5GHz band non-DFS to 200mW and 6GHz band will have different channels support. When reading product reviews make sure they apply to your location.

Follow @sl4fko advice above - model with Asuswrt-Merlin support present already. Otherwise - no guarantees. Get a popular model for a chance of longer Asus support upstream, needed for Asuswrt-Merlin. This is the experience so far. Niche products get less firmware updates with large gaps between.

First off, what surprises me is you speak for Merlin. You assume Merlin only cares about models widely released in Canada. I never found Canadian release/presence/cost as the rationale for Merlin's adoption in his stated rationale other than that he must obviously have availability in Canada to get hold of one - which is possible now (in what Merlin himself said - a product must be available in multiple geo's - not just 1 or 2 countries - which is what I referenced).

What is your data-driven rationale for declaring a model's popularity or unpopularity ? I have interacted with several people on Reddit who have BT10 and also found Gnuton's polling on Github, where multiple people have tagged the BT10.

It might be available later in Canada, at which point Merlin may consider. Gnuton might adopt it - or he may not. You point out Merlin's comment on some other product as rationale to editorialize unrelated matters and decision-making by Merlin and Gnuton.

Second, you also advised me incorrectly previously that AIMesh for AX might have compatibility with AIMesh for BE. I speak from experience now with my BT10 and AX58 in AiMesh that there are absolutely zero compatibility issues. So you are spreading FUD without actual hard data in this forum.

This is a form of misleading people. If you'd just like to sell Ubiquiti - you can create a sub-forum for Ubiquiti and do it there.

To set the record straight - I'm only blaming you only for yourself. Please refrain from replying to my posts here - that will not be a loss for anyone.

What I find misleading is the claim “everything works on it” without having a chance to test the main selling feature of this device - AiMesh as a set. About 3rd party firmware support - I just had to send you straight to “Read me first” threads like other forum members do without much explanations why what you want is unlikely to happen now, any time soon or at all. Good luck.

Thanks @Tech9 for info

it seems like I have to wait some time before upgrading.

There isn't enough to choose from here now.

Honestly, you already have very capable and popular AX-class router. It is supported by both Asus and Asuswrt-Merlin on more mature 388 code base. I would think about upgrading only months after this router reaches End-of-Life state and Asuswrt-Merlin is no longer available for it.

The 92U does have a lower end CPU than the 98/96/88/86. I don't think we have enough info on how much of a difference it makes, but that fact at least made me look at the other ones because of the more common hardware in them.

its not fair to call it lower end, its still a B53 based quad core and the 92U performs better than the BE 88/86 on WIFI total throughput.

After all replies here (thanks all), I will play the wait and see game. Anyway routers like 92U and 96U are not yet for sale in Denmark and 98U Pro is overkill, I live in 40 square meters and have no 4x4 clients. 1 Mini-PC and Laptops, all 2x2 M.2.

What's the reason you want to replace your RT-AX86U in first place? Seems like it's overkill already.

I want a 3-band router as I have install an Intel AX210 in my Mini-PC and a laptop. Wi-Fi speed is low on my Mini-PC (under 100 mbit/s).

Stardust, I researched and followed the technically in-depth and data/reference recommendations for getting my router (which I wanted tri-band too, and also 4x4) from here: https://www.wiisfi.com/#recommendation

Specifically, my clients are 2x2 as well, as most are, but that's not the reason I picked a 4x4 tri-band BE/Wifi7 router. It might be an interesting read for you too.

"4×4 MIMO - increases signal quality, reliability, and range for all 2×2 MIMO client devices. Do not buy a 2×2 or 3×3 MIMO router. You really do want a 4×4 router."

In measured terms, I wanted reliable > 1 Gbps speeds wirelessly within my home-intranet across AX (6E) clients. I also wanted a reliable fully wireless mesh network across my wooden walls to function well. In my previous set-up, I was getting at best 0.85 Gbps within my home with my AX router with 5 GHz, although very reliable. After the upgrade, I am getting at best 2.4 Gbps (when used over 6 GHz) and 1.7 Gbps at worst (when falling back to 5 GHz band automatically, at the farthest corners of my home), still reliably.
