Nothing is forcing you to upgrade to firmware to the 'locked' versions. ;)

Just don't expect to be warned, because it could be late.

The RT-AC68A can no longer be found on Amazon. Not sure what will happen with the pre-orders. My pre-order is still in Amazon's system. Maybe I'll just wait for the RT-AC1900P, and cancel the pre-order.

It is strange that no one seems to know for sure (except RMerlin), what Asus has done to be FCC compliant. Maybe this should be the subject of another thread.

That's because it's still a work-in-progress, they haven't released any final code with those changes in place yes. I don't know any details either, and probably won't until they've finalized it.

Why do I get this creepy feeling that the "work in progress" moving towards FCC compliance will never end ?... now that their crony entities like the FTC have their boot on the throats of the wireless router and device manufacturers...

...of course they will claim that all this regulatory oversight and all these changes are being done purely "for our own security" and to protect the consumer. o_O

I realize this is a big brother type of question so answer at your own discretion... When was it too late not to upgrade to the latest "locked" firmware version? For security, bug fixes and other reasons most responsible owners upgrade their firmware to the latest version... right?

Not sure I get/understand your question 100%, but I always upgrade to the latest version as it becomes available for the reasons you state.

I don't have an issue with output power firmware. I want everyone to be happy. :)

Just curious. Does anyone know if there any way Asus can force a router firmware update without the owner having to install the update? I would hope not!

Does the FCC lock-down only apply to routers sold after June?

I have read that TP-Link is already shipping FCC compliant routers which will not allow none TP-Link firmware to run.

I'd encourage folks to read release notes and see if the update is needed... this goes for anything, not just Asus Router/AP's - sometimes updates fix problems, other times, they introduce new ones...

The deadline for mandatory compliance is June 2016, so it has to end before then.

Really, there's nothing to be worked over about. Asus has already confirmed they had no intention of locking out third party firmware. As far as I'm concerned, it's all that matters.

There's currently no such mechanism in the firmware. The update checker cannot initiate an upgrade without the user's intervention.

The new regulations apply to any device marketed after that time. I assume that means anything still actively sold at that time.

Honestly, power output boosting is mostly snake oil. Having your router output at 1W won't do you any good if your laptop's 15 mW radio is unable to communicate back with your router...

So other than Power, what other specific radio parameters DO / CAN other firmware mess with? I'm just trying to figure out what the FCC is worried about.

Channels and DFS.

Asus Customer Support does not even have a clue when the RT-AC1900P will be available... I asked.

Not to mention what it will sell for.. A router with one of the fastest procs out there.. ya that will be x2 the price..

Note that not all models are available in every countries. Different markets will have different products available.

I wonder why ASUS would make the RT-AC1900P? I have not heard of anyone being CPU bound at dual 1Ghz on the AC-68U/P . Why make something that is using old radio tech(disclaimer I JUST bought a RT-AC68U) with such a beefy proc? It's not like the old models AC1900 are not selling well. This makes me wonder if they are about to introduce something in the firmware that is going to need the extra CPU power.
