Hey guys.

I have an AC66R with 374.43 AsusWRT merlin

This is my 2nd one. The speeds on 2.ghz are unusable.

Speedtest.net shows internet speeds on 5ghz band at 40Mbps which is expected
2.4ghz band gets only 2.2 Mbps.

LAN traffic is the same. Testing with NASTester shows 5ghz files moving at 11MBPs. 2.4ghz traffic just times out it's so slow.

NOt sure what to do. I changed the SSID when testing so the only thing on the network was my laptop. I tried changing from Auto to 20 ghz to 40ghz but no difference in performance.

What could it be? Is it a faulty unit? I retunred one already for the same issue but it's the same thing again. My older Linkyss WRT-610N performed flawlessly on the 2.4ghz band.

Have you done a "clean" reinstall of the firmware and settings? I'm talking detach everything but an ethernet line to a laptop. Restore to default settings. Reinstall firmware. Redo settings by hand. Only after all settings are done reattach to modem/usb/other stuff?

Also, do you know what your speeds are hardlined to the router for comparison?

Update laptop WiFi drivers,.from maker of WiFi nic, not from laptop maker.
Disable power management for WiFi.

Try settings that you will find in my gallery.

Disable tcp/ip autotuning in windows.

Only use your ISPs speed test website. 3rd party speed test sites arent always accurate.
Or transfer a single large file from another PC that is hardwired in to router.

My RT-AC68U has the same issues with the 2GHZ network. My Chromecast is basically unusable since it cannot sue 5GHZ. I kept lowering the output power and for some odd reason around 25% it started to perform better.

I had wireless issues with 374.43 on my RT-N66U. When watching Hulu shows or movie using 2.4 wireless things would start out fine and then would get the dreaded buffering message or pauses. At the time this would happen speedtest would show my download at around 1Mb/sec should be around 7.5Mb/sec. Upload remained unchanged.
A reboot would correct the problem. About 1/2 hour later we would be back to the same issue again if I continued to watch Hulu.

Yes I had done a reset and new config when I installed 43. Going back to 374.42 corrected the issue in my case. Not sure what was going on, nor did I do much problem determination. Knew 42 worked so re-installed it.

For me there seemed to be an issue with the 2.4 wireless on 374.43. Do not know about the 5 wireless as only devices I have that are 5 are two iPhones and they do not get pushed. Guess I should upgrade but don't have that much interference around me.

Have now installed 376.44 and do not have any issues. I did do a reset and configure after installing 376.44 as suggested by Merlin.

Hey guys

Did you try .44 ? I was on .43 with the issue and went to .44 this morning and had the same issue.

Interestingly, I went back to my old (WRT-610N Linksys) router and noticed that my 2.4ghz seems slow there as well, which it didn't before. Also, this Asus router was performing OK when I first installed it in early July.

Since I'm having this issue on two routers I assume there is something else causing the issue. The Vizio TV I have and my two Chromecasts have their own SSID broadcast. Not sure if that is part of the issue. I had these earlier though so I don't know why this is a new issue now.

ALso my Sonos is there as well, but again I've had that for three years with no issues. It just seems like all of a sudden I'm having this issue.

I changed my channel to 11 / 20GHZ to avoid conflicting and I got a link score of 100 on inSSIDer. But still had the same issue. So I'm pretty lost as to this. Meanwhile, I can't get high quality video on the Chromecast and can't play any online games because those devices are only 2.4ghz. Ugh!

I've done this a few times. I used speedtest.net on multiple computers (work laptop, personal laptop, and two phones) and they all perform horrible on 2.4 and at advertised speeds on 5ghz.

Also; I used NAStester to test local internet speeds (transfer to / from my Synology NAS) and the same thing happens. 5ghz gives me ~80 - 90 Mbps and 2.4ghz gets me 2 - 4 Mbps.

Yes my desktop is hardlined and I get 100Mbps to my NAS and internet speeds consistent with wifi from my ISP, about 30Mbps

One more thing to add. I live in a remote area on 2 1/2 acres of land so I only occasionally pick up 1 bar of my next door neighbors linksys router. Other than that there is no competing SSID besides devices in the house.

More info. Here is what I have in the house for connected stuff.

(3) IP Cameras (FOSCAM) - 2.4
(2) Chromecast (2.4)
(1) Desktop (Ethernet)
(1) PS4 (2.4)
(2) Android phones (5ghz)
(2) Laptops (5ghz)
(1) Wifi Scale (2.4ghz)
(2) Nest Thermostat (2.4ghz)
(1) PS3 (2.4)
(1) Roku (2.4)
(1) DISH Receiver (2.4)
(1) NExus 7 Tablet (5ghz)
(1) Sonos system (Play:5, Play:3, and Connect, and Bridge) Uses SonosNET, bridge connected w/ Ethernet
(1) Wifi Printer (2.4ghz)
(1) Synology NAS (Ethernet)

When I tested this I did change my SSID so I only had one laptop connected at a time. But I've had all this stuff forever and my speeds were OK previously.

Disconnect and turn off all your devices and start from scratch, till you find the culprit.
