How to add a wired client to the IoT guest pro

128bit

Senior Member
i have configured a 2.4g vlan using the IoT template on the Guest Network Pro page of my ax88u pro. works great but i have a wired client that i'd like to have on that same vlan. i suspect that i have to define an address range for the vlan and assign an address within it to that client. is that possible and if so, how? i'd be fine with an easier method as well.

Go to LAN/VLAN and choose the Ethernet port your client is connect to. That client will get an address from DHCP

i spent a lot of time on that page. have a bald spot now from wondering what to do next. the asus readings helped some but i'm still confused. i'm using the guest pro iot template with some wireless clients on a specific ssid. since a wired client needs no ssid, i'm not sure of the structure.
lan>vlan>>profile currently has no entries. should the iot have a profile to which i can add this wired client?
  • do i need to define some higher level vlan profile then add the iot template clients and the wired client to it?
either way, i'm likely missing something very basic here.
thanks

Some Asus support information on VLAN's if one hasn't seen it already. See the description of Trunk port and Access port and then see the section on LAN port mode:

On the LAN > VLAN page. For a wired Ethernet computer one would likely use Access port for the Mode, and select the VLAN (i.e. the IoT network) for the SDN VLAN profile for the network port the computer is connected to.
indeed, i'm thinking "access" as opposed to trunk but i expected to see an id for the iot template. nothing. one would think if a vlan is already defiend it would have an id but no gots. btw, i was all over that page you sent before the last post. ;) that's why i'm bald.

Maybe you only have the suggested option if the IoT network is on a different VLAN than the main network?
at this point, that fits. i just wish asus did a better job with their doc. i've got to find some generic stuff on vlan properties, i.e., id, profile to name a couple. a nice hierarchical chart with those terms would help or at least a definition. the help from all has been appreciated.

Working for me on a RT-AX86U Pro running stock Asus 3.0.0.6.102_34349 firmware. Created a "Test" IoT Guest Network Pro preset entry then went to the LAN > VLAN page. Set one of the LAN port Mode to Access, then in the SDN (VLAN) Profile field both my existing Guest Network Pro "Custom Network" presets are listed along with the "Test" IoT entry. See attached examples.

this is extremely helpful! got some errands to run then i will try again later tonight. didn't want you to think it was ignored.

i have tried to replicate the configuration you snapshotted above but conspicuously absent is a vlan id. your config labeled "test" appears to have a vlan id of 54. when i create mine, no id is shown. my sequence below:
  1. guest pro "IoT Network" network name "test io" (apply)
  2. lan>vlan under port 2 i change mode "all" to "access" (apply)
when the screen refreshes, mode still = "all." perhaps i missed a step. was i supposed to define a profile on the lan>vlan page and choose some numeric id first? then use the IoT template on the guest network page??

What do you have on these screens?
esp. Advanced Settings.
Also, what do you have for the Drop Down "Access Intranet"?

k.

these are my native settings that currently work fine with wireless clients. i have since deleted my "test" profile but can easily reconfigure.

esp. Advanced Settings.
What is on the Advanced Tab please?

Each VLAN Profile under the 'GNP' Tab has three horizontal sections (Tabs) and some slightly hidden drop-downs I might add, esp the Access Intranet drop down but that is an aside.

The 3 horizontal sections are General, Advanced Settings and AIMesh as shown in the attached. What is on the Advanced Settings one?

If you click the DOWN arrow on General to "minimise" it, you should see the other two tabs; which you can then drop down.

Post a screen shot of the Advanced Settings section of the IoT VLAN you have created (redact any sensitive information). Example of what mine looks like attached. The VLAN ID number was auto generated by the router GUI in my case.

Strange. After some further testing using the router's GUI. Deleting and adding an IoT Guest Network Pro preset several times, the IoT entry suddenly stopped showing the VLAN ID number both on the Profile List and in the Advanced Settings for the IoT when it was created in the Guest Network Pro section. I assume this is some sort of bug in the 3006 firmware.

Using the Guest Network Pro Customized Network preset works though and a VLAN ID number is shown. So this may be the workaround if IoT doesn't show a VLAN ID, use Customized Network instead.

Rebooted the router and creating a IoT Guest Network Pro entry still doesn't show the VLAN ID. Tried a different web browser (Edge), same issue, VLAN not shown for IoT. Tried using the Asus mobile app for Android, same issue, VLAN ID number not shown when creating an IoT preset Guest Network. Weird.

Edit to add: If people experience this issue (no VLAN ID with IoT) they may want to use the Administration > Feedback form to submit a bug report to Asus.

i believe you nailed it here. when using guest network pro>customized, a vlan id is now created; also, the lan>vlan profile page is populated with the new test entry (attached). as a result, i'm much further along. i will now look to see what i can do with the wired client. i will report this behavior to asus.
phenomenal work! this is the sort of stuff my team did decades ago, when i had one of the network test departments. you should be on their payroll as an adjunct tester.

masterful work, gents.

More information after spending some time troubleshooting and looking at things with the IoT missing VLAN ID issue on an RT-AX86U Pro running 3.0.0.6.102_34349 that already has two working Guest Network Pro Customized Network entries running. As a prior post with attached screen capture indicates, the IoT entry had a VLAN ID at one point, but now no longer does when it is created.

Tried exporting a router CFG file with my two existing Guest Network Pro's Customized Networks but without the IoT entry.
Reset the router including initialize all settings.
Reimported the CFG file during the QIS Wizard > Advanced Settings section.
After router finished setting up tried creating a new Guest Network Pro IoT entry, same issue. No VLAN ID.

Have not tried a reset with manual configuration (i.e. no CFG import). Don't have the time to do so at the moment.

Generally I don't use the IoT Guest Network Pro setting, instead prefer to use the Customized Network Guest Network Pro setting. Mainly due to what appears to be a few more configuration options in the Customized Network setting.

Anyone with this IoT missing VLAN ID issue should submit a feedback report to Asus. If enough people complain hopefully it will get fixed. Submitted feedback from the RT-AX86U Pro on this issue to Asus. And people who are affected by this issue may want to consider using Customized Network in the mean time until Asus fixes the IoT missing VLAN ID issue (assuming its a wide spread issue).

Somewhere along the way it appears the IoT Guest Network Pro stops being created correctly. Went in and compared an NVRAM dump of the IoT which has the missing VLAN ID with a Customized Network which has the VLAN ID, and see a number of either missing values from the IoT or values that are different. Here are some of the missing or different NVRAM information between the IoT and Customized Network:
