Asuswrt-Merlin (or XWRT or Cross-WRT) firmware for Netgear R7000 router, based on a Asuswrt-Merlin.
DD-WRT, Tomato by Shibby, DD-WRT Kong Mod.

I'll chime in with another vote for AdvancedTomato.

I have been using Shibby's TomatoUSB variant for over a year, when I stumbled upon AdvancedTomato around September 2016.

Shibby has given sparse updates on Linksysinfo.org, but in recent posts he has said that he's been very busy with his full time job so there hasn't been much time to update the firmware. Although to be fair, there isn't much that needs to be fixed right now. Maybe QoS.

stick with factory for now - see how it works out for you...

Try to avoid the AsusWRT forks (if one wants to run AsusWRT, buy an Asus).

Device with latest factory firmware is pretty good... and used to be @thiggins reference platform for testing...
