Looking for feedback: renaming the Tools menu for Sysinfo

Hi,

Over time, the Tools menu (which was originally largely intended to add extra tweak settings) has turned more into a section to display detailed system information, with the RAM and temperature charts among other things.

I am considering renaming Tools for Sysinfo. Any thoughts? Considering that Tools menu has been there since 2012, I am unsure of how much confusion renaming it may cause.

Ideally I should have done it at the time 3006.102.1 came out (since that's where I was looking at already doing various major changes), but considering that 3006.102.4 will be the first 3006 release to target a large number of users, that might be the last good occasion I have to make such a change.

Agree 100%. I never learned to go to the Tools menu when I needed to look some system information. Maybe it was the misleading name that made my brain to block that memory...

Moving Tweaks to System would indeed make sense. I'm not sure about moving the Sysinfo page however, as it's something which I feel is nice to be able to access in a single click, while if I move it to System Log I would need to move it more at the end of the tabs.

In an ideal world, if I were a competent webui designer, I would have liked to do like Asus did with ROG or ExpertWifi: design a new landing page to replace the current Networkmap, with that Networkmap page still being accessible by clicking on it. I toyed with the idea in early 3006 development, but quickly dismissed it as not being realistic for me to achieve.

I think you should do two things:

1. Rename the "Tools" menu to "Sysinfo" with only one tab in it.
   In the future, it could potentially be expanded to include more tabs...
2. Move "Other Settings" under Administration.

I'm onboard with renaming Tools to Sysinfo. It would also make sense to rename Network Map to Dashboard it would be a more accurate description but considering that Network Map is the default landing page it's not really a big deal

I don't want to rename Asus' tabs. Beside, in Asuswrt context, Network Map and Dashboard are two different things that already exists within ROG and Expert webui, so I can't just rename Network Map for the name of another existing section.

Tools becoming Sysinfo related information, makes perfect sense, at least from my perspective. For me, I’ve always considered “Tools” to be a section where I would go for system related information.

On that note, would it be worthwhile adding a permanent Third Party Addons tab/section elsewhere in the WebUI? I know some addons such as Scmerlin and SpdMerlin add it in, but I’m unclear how they make it available if it doesn’t already exist. Reason I ask is, I’m currently in the process of developing a “ScriptsUI” section / tab as noted here, and I was thinking about adding it under the Tools section. But I was wondering if it would create some consistency if any / all third party addons were to have a dedicated area , such as Addons to be available by default, for WebUi addons?

Sometimes less is more - there's a lot of stuff that isn't really needed.

The new Dashboard is a nice start. Sadly, it's not planned to be migrated to non-ExpertWifi devices. And it's also 80% the old UI, just within a wrapper. Only a few pages were re-designed based on bootstrap, like the new Dashboard.

I thought about it when initially planning the webui Addon support, and ultimately decided against it.

As you suggested - change Tools to Sysinfo / move the "Other Settings" Tab to Administration.
Is the TCP/IP settings section in Other Settings a relic from the old days - or do users actually feel the need to fiddle with those?

I would also support a separate "Add On" Tab with subtabs being created off that page by the add-on developers.
That may however be a debate between you and the add-on developers .?
