Hi,
Need advice.
Got new router if possible will like to transfer all settings to the new.
Do I have to do it manually or is there other way?
Thanks

nope , just stock , but the E series chip for the 5 gig just make it so much better than the 68u , it may look the same physically as the rt-ac68u but the rt-ac86u is a wolf in sheep's clothing

I hade stock , but after flashing with merlin getting better range and speed.

Interesting... my stock 86U range is shorter than merlin 68U. Need to find Merlin alpha to try.

Did you scan for open channels prior to setting up the RT-AC86U? Nearly all of the default channels for 2.4GHz and 5GHz in my neighborhood are saturated due to home users buying routers and just plugging them in and never checking. It may be the same case for you. Straight out of the box, just about everything performs like crap in my neighborhood compared to my RT-AC66U... that is, until I get it set up properly so I have a respectable signal to noise ratio.

That's great to hear. My RT-AC86U arrives tomorrow. One of the reasons I got it is due to the weak 5GHz coverage of my RT-AC66U. To top it off, 2.4GHz is so saturated in my neighborhood that it's practically useless as enough people have now caught on and are using channels 3 and 9.

as enough people have now caught on and are using channels 3 and 9.

as thee 2 channels overlap with ch 1 , 6 and 11 its not that wise to use them anyway

here is a little comparison for you @ about 80 feet and 3 to 4 walls away

asus rt-ac68u

2.4 gig

read 16 MB/s write 16 MB/s sync 364.5M ( at 40mhz )

5 gig

read 45.5 MB/s write 28 MB/s sync 866.5M

asus rt-ac86u

2.4 gig

read 24 MB/s write 24 MB/s sync 364.5M ( at 40mhz )

5 gig

read 61 MB/s write 40 MB/s rssi -58 sync 585M

I just tested my RT-AC66U going through three walls at about 60 feet. Client is a Win7 PC using a dwa 556 xtreme wireless-n adapter (300 Mbps max). Tx is turned all the way up in Merlin.

2.4 GHz
Read 5.18 MB/s down and write 2.56 MB/s up @ -66 dB (20 MHz)

And then tested an Intel NUC with AC about 20 feet and one wall away from the router.

2.4 GHz
Read 9 MB/s down and write 9 MB/s up @ -54 dB (20 MHz)

5 GHz
Read 21 MB/s down and write 21 MB/s up @ -67 dB (40 MHz)

Channels 1, 6, and 11 on 2.4 GHz are all being used by my neighbors. Channels 3, 4, 8, and 9 give the best performance, despite the fact there is overlap. Can't wait for the 86U to arrive!

get ready for your socks to be blown of in comparison :)

however you wont see the greatest benefit until you replace that old dwa 556

with something like the asus pce-ac88

Only I am using 5GHz in my neighborhood. Getting the same result as pete. Signal range is shorter on 86U but better throughput than 68U. Therefore, it is actually an improvement as long as you are in range. :)

Wow. That pce-ac88 almost costs as much as the rt-ac86u.

After reading comments in this forum many years ago, I gave up on wireless entirely and decided to wire my entire house with Cat6. That old dwa 556 is a remnant of days long past. It was the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. Every PC in my house is on gigabit Ethernet now. Wireless is used mainly for newer Apple handheld devices, which is why I'm so glad to see that 5GHz is working so well.
