Hello Lonwolf,

What I mean and as an example.

Are you using in you:
IP pool starting address: 192.168.1.2
IP pool ending address: 192.168.1.254

Enable Manual Assignment.
Manually Assigned IP around the DHCP MAC address:
192.168.1.20
192.168.1.21
etc...

I am just asking if your Manually assigned MAC addresses fall within the scope of your DHCP pool starting/ending addresses.

Thanks,

Michael...

I have a DHCP pool of 192.168.11.120-11.200.

I have set static reservations within that pool for about half a dozen devices, so that 11.120, 121, 122, etc. are assigned by the RT-AC87R to specific MAC addresses. As stated before, the reservations are "within the pool". These are for several specific network clients, a DVR, and a gaming console, among other things.

I do have static addresses that are below the 120 and as such, are not assigned by the router (e.g., my server, printers, etc.) but that's a separate part of my design.

Yeah, as I read this thread I kept thinking to myself, "When has a wireless router not been a complete PITA?".

The simple fact is asus changed the game with cool aesthetics and more features. Yes the gui has become difficult to work with if not using IE and yes, it can be frustrating in other ways like crashing when changing settings. But before the dark knight came out all routers looked like uninspired metal boxes and I give asus props for taking the device more seriously than any other company.

Can it be better, hell yes it can be better but the upgrades come so fast, each product only has so much dev time. Remember how long it took game devs to master the ps3, or the 360? That hardware stayed relatively the same for years and there were many, many dev teams trying to get it perfect.

Asus, like any other manf is a team of people, working to make us products we want. Just bro's like you and me. I don't expect what I can't deliver myself. FWIW;)

AC87u and AC68u

Hello.

I just bought the 87 and installed it (using asus latest firmw on both).
I put the 68 in repeater mode downstairs (87 upstairs) wireless connection btw the two (which is the point for me). I do have some issues though and would appreciate some advise.

1. For expending the network (dont want more networks if I can avoid it w. low penalty) do I use repeater or? A friend told me to use media bridge, i dont get the difference really.

2. I have a Marantz music player that has network play (internet radio, airplay and such) at the point where my repeater is. GREAT I thought, then I can connect it (wire only) to the repeater (68), and get internet access player -wire to 68u -wireless to- 87u - to my adsl modem --> internet. However, my internet radio works very badly, drops all the time, lags... much worse than my LAN via powergrid plugs worked before (and they were barely working!). Airplay works OK btw. ?!?! What is going on?

3. When I transfer larger files over the wireless it is not really fast to be honest..

4. If I do transfer larger files over wlan it often drops (unknown error -51) on my mac

5. I use win and mac in my network... and on my mac use remote desktop. After the new installation of the 68 and 87 it works ok.. but freezes so I have to restart it (restart the app and est. a new connection) much more often than before.

Please advise. Should I simply skip using a repeater? Or is the problem in the new 87? I also got the advise to install Merlin, and was about to, but really would like to keep asus original as updates are so much easier that way.

I know I am a whiny person, but hoping for some help.
