New Around Here
Hello folks,
I recently discovered my router is rebooting itself, I believe. I've read the log but could not find anything out of the ordinary, here are a few things that might help:
  • The lines that are in blue is because I run syncthing on my desktop (192.168.11.5) and in my phone (192.168.11.168)
  • Firmware is the latest in ASUS website 3.0.0.4.382_50702
  • I did a factory reset yesterday but no luck so far
  • I have another cisco e1200 in the living room connected through wifi to this router
  • It reboots randomly not at any particular time
  • 1 desktop connected over ethernet, 1 pc acting as a server connected over ethernet (offline right now) and 3 wireless (smartphones)
Thanks for reading

After doing the reset on your RT-N66U, did you do a minimal and manual configuration to secure it and connect to your ISP? If you used a saved config file, the net effect would be like you did not do a (proper) reset.

Have you tried john9527's firmware for your router? Many updates, security, and bug fixes since that old stock firmware was released almost a year ago.

Hello, thanks for your reply.
I did not use a config file, and yes I did a minimal setup. What do you mean by the net effect...? No, I haven't tried that firmware yet, I did use Merlin once but I was getting some weird lag spikes on CS:GO that weren't there before so I went back to stock.

If you had used a backup config file after doing a full reset to factory defaults, the net effect would have been as if you hadn't done the reset to defaults in the first place. ;)

Grisu may be onto something! I would still suggest moving to a still supported firmware fork though.

Maybe faulty power adapter.
I moved the power adapter to another socket, just in case.

Oh I see, no I didn't use one. Most of the time config files mess things up with a lot of devices and software, so I don't make them.

Well, a brief update, so far its up and running for 15hs+ straight. What I did:
  • Changed the power adapter to another socket.
  • Went back to a previous firmware.
  • Checked if any device was running a webserver or something that could make the router crash, none found.
  • Changed the DHCP query to Normal, instead of aggressive. although it always was in aggresive mode, my ISP gave me another modem so maybe they messed with something on their end.
  • Disabled a guest vLAN
  • Disabled the other AP connected via wifi, now I only have 1 wired device and 6 wireless connected to the 2.4ghz spectrum

I think I found the problem, its the Guest VLAN. I've been sharing internet with a local neighbour who owns a shop for a long time now, but as soon as I enabled the guest vlan the router crashed into oblivion. Here's the log. They only have smartphones, no laptops/IP cameras

Hello again, to anyone facing a similar issue:
As I said before, my LAN has 2 wired PCs and 6 wireless devices (4 phones 2 laptops) and since I'm sharing internet access to a business right next to my house through wifi in a vLAN devices come and go all the time, they have 5-6 phones connected at all times but the problem was an AppleWatch, don't know the reason why but it made the router reboot itself, as soon as I revoked that device access the router became stable for 8 days and counting.

Router N66U running Merlin firmware 380.70
