NAS recommendation

Please suggest a NAS with following requirements
Budget $450
Storage required 2Tb upto 4Tb
Usage : Dropbox replacement and torrents download using transmission.
Users at max 2-3.

I don't know any at that price point with drives included that I would want to recommend.

Keep saving or otherwise increase your budget.

Fyi, nothing replaces Dropbox. It is still the standard which nothing else quite compares to.

Are you looking at single bay or multi-bay?

I have a QNAP TS-112P (single bay) and I like it.

It was $125 or so and the 3TB drive was another $125.

I don't have any issue with single bay NAS, but 2 bay provides the redundanc. I can live with 2TB of storage. So please suggest any other which I might have overlooked.

2-bay is great, just don't get fooled into thinking RAID1 is backup, it's not.

Whether you get a single bay or 6-bay NAS, you need adequate external backup.

RAID is for drive failure but doesn't protect you against NAS failures.

I use my 2 bay without RAID. I set it up (Synology) for two independent volumes, each with a different file system. And automatic file versioning copies from one to the other.

Plus a 2.5 in. USB3 drive for backup, kept out of sight of thieves.

Don't get Green disks. They are not suitable for NAS use.

Red disks are a much better choice.

I use WD Reds and HGST Deskstar NAS drives. They're both supported by QNAP and I've gotten very good life out of them versus others like Seagate.

I buy drives from Newegg too. WD or Seagate.

I have DS212 (no the slower j model).
The last two digits are the year of product launch.
DS213 is too old to buy as new, I think.

Seagate has been complete garbage for the last couple of years. I've replaced hundreds of them in both home and enterprise setups.

I will setup a VPN server too. can Synology DS215J's Dual Core 800 MHz(MARVELL Armada 375 88F6720) handle a small vpn server with 1-2 users ? without complaining ?

Have you tried the Seagate Constellation ES.3? These have been great for me. Enterprise class SATA3 disk just like the HGST Ultrastar.

If the returns (RMA) process for 'red' drives is the same as for black, though 'red' may have a longer warranty - most often you get a used / reconditioned drive, with lord knows how many hours on it.

I have consumer WD drives in my always on PC in the garage. Have run for 6 years so far. I have some others too with lots of hours. I don't think drives are mechanically failing at the rate they did 8 or 10 years ago, if the drivers aren't jostled while spinning (head crash risk). Like they finally perfected the materials used in the motor bearings.

WD WD20EURX 2TB AV 3.5” IntelliPower (same price as WD red)

and WD WD20PURX 2TB Purple 3.5" SATA3 ( $10 cheaper than WD red)

what is the difference btw WD red and WD AV ? both are meant for continuous operation.

The Purple line is for surveillance camera's I believe.

The AV line is for video/sound streaming.

In other words; one for streaming to the HDD, the other for streaming from the HDD.


Both not suitable for general NAS duties.
