It's almost 2024, the RT-AC86u is probably not flavour of the month on these forums (I had one) since it has/had a few issues. If your sole reason is looking for a router that can handle OpenVPN well, then look for a WiFi6/WiFi7 router with a powerful processor and good reviews.
Oh, and reliable parental control on a router - I've yet to be convinced that such a feature really exists!

No AC class router is recommended in late 2023.

Asus is head and shoulders above everything else available in the consumer space. Particularly if it is also RMerlin supported.

The two most bang for the buck routers today are the older GT-AX6000 and the more current RT-AX88U Pro.

As much as I like NETGEAR, in this case I'd recommend ASUS, especially for VPN stuff

Actually, I really like my Synology RT6600ax that's running my primary LAN/WLAN...

I do agree however, that 11ax these days is the place to be - one can get a lot of performance for a reasonable price - and it doesn't have to be Asus...

I did see Synology comes out with new firmware every couple of months. If they had just put 2 2.5Gbit ports on the RT6600ax...
