:) It depends on the device.

When the router reboots a device plugged directly into it will see its network interface go down and then come back up again. This will force the client to reinitialise its interface.

Devices plugged into a switch are physically isolated from this process so their interface remains up. However they will have lost connectivity to the internet and other router services like DHCP and DNS, but they can still communicate with other devices attached to the same switch. How the software that's running on these clients will react depends on how it's written.

Check the logs as a first step.

I am trying to upload a text file that has the logs. But it won't let me upload the text file.

Your log is being filled up with all those scanning/hacking attempts on your VPN server, so the old entries probably got archived when the log rotated.

I suggest that for now you turn off your VPN server so we can see the log file properly in the future.

What about log files on some of the client devices that disconnected, they will probably be more useful.

Ok, I just turned off the builtin VPN. Also, I went to the basement 3 times, unplugging the power from the POE (power over internet) adapter for my camera that won't come back online. It still would not connect. I then went back down and removed the power from the 8 port Ethernet switch and when I restored the power to the switch, the cam came back online..........

My head is swimming. I HOPE the router is not the problem. I have another one to swap, but even if that worked, it still does NOT prove the Asus router is bad.

I have two main cat 6 cables coming from my Asus router, one going to my entertainment center and one to the basement for my security cams.

From the cable going to the entertainment center, into a brand new 16 port Ethernet switch, I have 2 or 3 devices that goes off line around 3 am (from the log that disappeared). One of the devices is my HDHomeRun OTA (over the air (antenna)) networked tuner. One of the other devices is my Android box running my tvheadend DVR server using CoreELEC, it runs 24/7 and has NEVER gone off line, until a couple of weeks ago. Now it goes off line every night. Ghost maybe???? Messing with me???

The other main cat 6 cable from my router, goes to the basement and connects to my 8 port switch. That switch feeds 3 Android boxes and one microPC, none of which drop offline. It also feeds another 4 port POE switch for 4 of my security cams, they do not drop offline. It also feeds my POE adapter for my last security cam, it is the one that keeps dropping offline....

What should my next trial be??

I am not familiar with the devices you're having problems with. If they have their own log files that would be the place to look to try and understand why they're going offline. Do these devices require a constant connection to the internet to function properly? If so maybe you're loosing your internet feed overnight (ISP issue) and they don't like it.

Other than that I'd say wait and see what happens tonight. Now that the router's log file is less busy we might get some clues.

Those devices do NOT require any internet connection to stay running (as far as I know). Yes, after stopping the VPN, no more entries in the log since
Sep 20 17:00:28 disk_monitor: Got SIGALRM...
Tonight, I am going to remove the cat 6 cable going from my router to my entertainment center and see what happens. That will leave my IP camera connected to my LAN, and see if it drops offline tonight.

Last night I disconnected the Ethernet cable from my router that feeds my 16 port Ethernet switch at my entertainment center. I kept the cable connected that connects my router and the 8 port switch in the basement.
My security cam that keeps losing connection every night is connected to the 8 port switch in the basement, was still running this morning.

This test was with builtin VPN disabled. Also, there has not been any entry in the router log since I disabled the VPN yesterday 4:53 pm.

For the last week or so, each night I would lose connection with the security cam.

I will leave the VPN disabled and reconnect the Ethernet cable and leave it connected, and see if I lose connection to any of my other devices tonight.

Today's update***

Last night, when I last checked (at 1:30 am) using the Advanced IP Scanner app running under Windows, everything was connected to my network. All my devices were connected, and my VPN was disabled, but my DDNS WAS enabled.

This morning, good and bad news. The 2 or 3 devices that are connected to my entertainment center, that drop off the network EVERY night, were still connected. My security cam dropped off the network at 5:34 am this morning.

I have 5 security cams, 4 of them connected to a 4 port POE switch and one connected to a POE adapter. The cam that keeps dropping of the network is the one connected to the adapter. So, today, I moved the cam that keeps dropping off the network, from the adapter to the POE switch and moved one of the cams connected to the 4 port POE switch to the adapter. Tonight, this should tell me if the cam is dropping off the network or the adapter.

Of course while swapping cables for the security cams, I blew up my 8 port switch. Both my 8 port switch and 4 port POE switches are from Trendnet and look almost identical. Well, I had the power plug removed from both switches and when I plugged the power plugs back in, one popped and flashed. The POE switch uses 48 volt power supply, and the gigabit switch only uses a 5 volt power supply. The connectors were identical. Fortunately, it was NOT the POE switch that I blew up, because they are quite expensive. I did have a replacement so I am back in business.

Summation, devices only drop off the network sometime during the early morning hours. And TODAY, ONLY one device dropped off the network. Only thing different is that I have disabled the VPN (Asus native app).

These are my last log entries for 2 days.

Sep 20 16:53:03 kernel: gro disabled
Sep 20 16:53:03 dnsmasq[1940]: warning: no upstream servers configured
Sep 20 17:00:28 disk_monitor: Got SIGALRM...
Sep 20 23:00:27 disk_monitor: Got SIGALRM...
Sep 21 23:02:34 miniupnpd[718]: HTTP Connection from 192.168.10.72 closed unexpectedly
That last entry is the IP address for one of my IP cameras that is driven by the 4 port POE switch. If it dropped off the network, it must have come right back on, because I have never seen IT drop off the network.

Crap, several of my devices at my entertainment center, just
dropped off the network around 1 pm. I powered off and back on the new 18 port Ethernet switch, but that did not bring them back online. I swapped the Ethernet cables on the router, one going to the entertainment center and the one going to the basement. Next I will reboot the router and see if that will bring them back online.. Devices lost network connectivity.jpg
