Hi there.
I'm trying my issue in this forum as it has been giving me a few grey hairs. My setup is as follows:
ASUS RT-N66 router -> switch -> clients
I have a VPN solution from Private Internet Access which i only use on one of the clients. I have tried running VPN directly on the router, and managed to have it running pretty well, but as i have a fast connection and really do only need the VPN on that single client i would like to use it on that single machine only.

The machine running vpn client also runs a few local services, like apache and tvheadend server which i would like to access from outside (using the wan ip) but when the vpn client is started no connections are coming in from the wan ip. It works perfectly locally, meaning i can use https://whatevermyhostnamecouldbe.com but from outside the wan nothing happens. Is what i am doing impossible, as the client running the vpn solution is not the routing device on the network?. The guides i have come across assumes that the client is running on the router and i am kind of lost here.

Best Regards

Hello,

Search for selective routing.

I run my ps3, laptop and nexus 10 over vpn and desktop on WAN.

be advised that nat loopback. AI Cloud will not work if the openvpn client on the router is active. these are open problems.

I did search and try various solutions to selective routing. Reading this guide: http://www.linksysinfo.org/index.php?threads/route-only-specific-ports-through-vpn-openvpn.37240/ i was able to get it to run using openvpn directly on the router. But as i have 100mbit connection I thought it would be better to run the openvpn client on the internal network, on the machine i need to "protect" My issue could be that the openvpn client is not running on the routing device (ASUS RT-N66U) The fix may be as simple as adding a static route. I have tried implementing selective routing on the machine itself but did not have luck in that. It may simply not be possible when that machine is behind the router. I do not have very much experience with openvpn and/or routing, but think it must be possible to have the openvpn client run internally while still allowing traffic to flow to the forwarded ports on the same machine? Panic solution is to hook up yet another server and have that run the external services i need but i really would rather not go that way.

I see now. You are running openvpn server on your PC and you want to route items around the openvpn server on your machine? I haven't done that.

I run openvpn for US netflix. The speed on the AC66U is fine enough for 1080p steaming. I run Serviio on my PC that is routed around the VPN, so I can stream media to my cell while at work. Works like a charm.

I think the AC56U and the upcoming AC68U will allow you to run openvpn on the router itself with speeds that meet your expectations.
