No wireless AC mode for AC87R

I went out and bought an Asus RT-AC87R because I finally got sick of the Netgear R7000 running DD-WRT, so I hook it up, it runs its updates and then I flash it with Merlin's 376.44 firmware, and while I'm at it, I updated Merlin's firmware that's running on my RT-AC66R, which is setup as an AP on the other side if the house. After everything is loaded on each router, I go through the settings on the AC87R, the AC66R was just getting an upgrade, and under my 5Ghz wireless settings, I don't get an option for AC in Wireless Mode. The AC66R is setup for N+AC, but it doesn't matter what channel I set it to, what bandwidth I set it to, the security settings (I usually have it set for WPA2-Personal), the only Wireless Mode it gives me an option to choose from is Auto or N Only. Is this how the new AC87R is setup to work? Can it only be set to work in N only mode or Auto Mode? Please tell me this isn't true.

Just leave wireless mode to Auto. Quite frankly, I can't think of any reason not to.

Dude I am using "Auto" and the AC87R I have connects at about a 10-12% faster according to the wireless logs on my AC68U and the AC87R. Even the problem spot in my house, my daughter's bedroom, is seeing significant connection gains in both range and speed.

So I do not understand why you are so upset. Set it to "Auto" and let the router do the work it is designed for.

I have nothing to do with your reply to the guy . But why not ? its marketed as AC router not N

What if i want my pc to be just connected to AC ?

Btw i agree with u regarding ac87 rang , its better than ac68

Ok. Is there any particular reason why the new router only gives me the option to pick Auto or N+AC? Since I've been using this Netgear router as my primary router for the last 6 months or so and using the AC66R as an AP, I haven't been keeping up with the latest firmware updates, but whatever version firmware I was using before this allowed me to choose AC only for the 5Ghz channel and N only for the 2.4Ghz channel. Any particular reason it changed? Especially with the AC87R? On another note, what is the most optimum way for me to incorporate my Netgear R7000 router and my AC66R into my network with this new AC87R? I currently have my AC66R hooked into a powerline adapter on the other side of the house so I don't have to run it in repeater mode and cut the speed in half. I'm also using a Western Digital Wireless AC Repeater in the bedroom to hookup my 4K TV, DVD, Xbox One, Wii U, Sony 4K media streamer, Roku, DIRECTV, Samsung Homesync, etc into (well as many as it has ports for) trying to cut down on so many individual wireless devices, but I still have 5 tablets, 2 laptops, and my phone which have to use WiFi. Your firmware doesn't run on the Netgear R7000, so I have Kong's version of DD-WRT loaded onto it. I'm just wondering if it would be better for me to connect the AC66R or the R7000 (or keep using this repeater) to the AC87R, and which installation mode would be most optimal (I'm assuming a hard wire connecting one of these to the main router, the AC87R, and have it setup in AP mode). I'm trying to make the modt use of these routers instead of them sitting around collecting dust, and maybe my thinking is wrong here, if I had numerous devices, which have both built-in WiFi and a hard wired connection, if I try hardwiring as many devices as I can to these routers and then have the routers setup in AP mode, or repeater mode if I don't have a line drop, it'll cut down on all of the wireless traffic around the house. Having approx 45 devices on my network, with some streaming full 4K video, I'm trying to consolidate some of these components with an AP or a repeater and utilize the ports in the routers instead of everything being wireless. I think if I had everything setup to use WiFi, I would have so many signals bouncing around the house that my furniture would probably move on its own. Do you have any suggestions? I know your firmware allows me to setup a router and use it as an AP, but how should it be setup so I get the most optimal speed? And on the primary router, should anything be configured to work with these besides giving them static IP addresses? Everything is running under the same subnet so everything can see each other. Sorry this is so lengthy.

It does seem a little strange the setting is there for N+AC but dont work. Having it set to auto is all well and good but why does the firmware have the setting but it does not work. It must be a bug YES !! It worked fine with 43_2 and lower on the 68U.

I have no problem using Auto. It could say slow as dog shirt, but if it runs well on that setting, then everything is good. By the way DaveMishSr, do you have both the AC68U and the AC87R running on the same network? Is the AC68U setup as an AP off the AC87R?

I have tried both the AC66U and AC68U as media bridges with the AC87R just to see how they would do. Both kicked butt connecting at over 700Mbps while I was testing them out on my patio. Granted I was only checking to see if each model would connect with the AC87R and wasn't interested in any kind of speed benchmarks.

However, with the wireless network adapters on my laptop disabled forcing it to rely on the media bridge connection as its sole connection to the Internet, video streamed without pause or buffering of any kind, web sites usually loaded in 10 seconds or less and LAN traffic seemed fine.

Now, what's the difference between hooking it up and setting it as a media bridge vs an Access Point, which is using the same subnet as my primary router an a static IP of 192.168.1.2 so any device connected to it can also see anything connected to my primary router.

I also bought an RT-AC87U and upgraded the firmware to Merlin 380.69. I do not see an AC option in any wireless setup.I cannot see this as an oversight. Where can I find it?

thanks all, Bj

It is n/ac mixed .. You will find the best results by leaving the setting at "Auto".
