OpenVPN Client - Redirect internet traffic stops other device from working

In the wireless general tab, what is value of the wireless mode field? How old is her phone?

In LAN, DHCP Server Tab, try entering your router IP address in DNS server 1 field.

Maybe in Redirect Internet Traffic, you need to set to Policy Rules. Then create a policy for her phone to use WAN rather than VPN.

Check out this write up:

Hello,

As per your questions...
Wireless mode = Auto
Phone age = 3 years
LAN DHCP now has the router IP as the DNS1 and DNS2 is 8.8.8.8
Redirecting internet traffic for the Wife's phone may work, but it still does not explain why the problem is happening as I never had to do this before.

Adjustments to the WiFi settings are changed as per the instructions on the site.
Lets see.

I am having trouble finding the guide where the author recommended setting DNS1 on LAN to router IP. I have had it with and without and have seen no difference. Not sure why you would use google dns for dns2. Do you use a third party DNS for your WAN or your VPN provider? On the wireless mode setting, the reason I asked was if you had it set on N only and perhaps wife phone had a device that did not support N. Not sure what else to suggest other than using ip policy rules on vpn client and route her phone to WAN. Let us know how things work out.

I have now set the DNS1 to my router IP and DNS2 to my ISP DNS IP.
I used Google's IP as it was easier to remember so I can test to see if it would make a difference to the internet issue.

For now, I can say the issue is solved using a workaround of setting one of the DNS IP to a public/ISP one.

Thanks to all for their help :)

I had a similar problem with an Android phone. I set up two OpenVPN client configs on the phone , one for each site I support using the official OpenVPN android app, in addition to my vpn provider. When I tried to connect to the sites through router A, no problem. Router A is set up for all traffic to use the VPN client running on it. But running a vpn tunnel through a vpn tunnel can be slow.

But I could not connect to the remote sites through Router B on the android. iPad and Win 10 laptop could though. Router B also runs a VPN client. But is configured for policy rules and only one device goes through the vpn, all other the WAN. I turned off VPN client on router B. I could then connect to the remote sites via the android. I turned the vpn client back on the router, set Accept DNS Configuration to Relaxed, and in the LAN DHCP tab, entered my router ip in DNS1 and 8.8.8.8 in DNS2. I could then connect to the remote sites using android. What? Hey, it worked. But what is it with the android?

I want to do more testing with the settings. To see if I can change one or more back to the way I had them set originally.

What value for Accept DNS Configuration do you have set for your vpn client running on the router?

Glad to know I'm not the only one with this issue!
My VPN client is set to Strict on Accept DNS configuration.

I went back into the VPN client config and see DNS configuration was set to Strict after all. It was getting late in my time zone when I was troubleshooting this. I will leave things as is for now. At least the two of us have seen this anomaly with android over a vpn tunnel even though our use cases differ slightly. My android works fine connecting to the web on both routers. It is when I turn on the OpenVPN client on the phone is where it has issues with the router that has a vpn client running with policy rules. The LAN DNS settings are the solution to making it all work.

Bhups, I have the exact same issue you described. I'm using asuswrt-merlin in an Asus RT-AC68U. It seemed to work fine for a little bit and then out Galaxy S7 had issues with the convention. I'm using policy routes for one device to be routed through OpenVPN. It is a DNS issue.

Since this occurred, I learned some more nuances with Policy Rules and how to configure to avoid routing issues. I wrote a guide. Part II has the specific on Policy Rules.
