Hi RMerlin/John9527

Could I suggest a thread with your recommended optimal settings for routers covering things like Wireless, IP6, QOS, Firewall etc?
I know I get a bit overwhelmed with the amount of options available and would be very handy to have a list to check/test against.

Apologies if this has already been covered but I couldn't find anything from the search.

Regards
J

It's One of those how long is a piece of string questions. Maybe if you list your router model and what your priorities are, and anything beyond plain surfing you want to do with it, you might get specific advice.

Try here: http://www.snbforums.com/threads/best-settings-for-asus-ac68.16026/

Also try searching for "best settings" in quotations marks , if you didn't already. Sometimes, I've found searching on Google is better eg "best settings" router Merlin forum .

Thanks Martinr, I had a look at the link you posted and also googled but neither really worked for what I'm asking.
What I'm suggesting is a list of router settings from experts like RMerlin or John9527 rather than other people's experiences.
These should hopefully work across all routers and not just the 87u I have.

My suggestion is a simple and straight forward three step approach:
  1. Do a factory rest and configure ONLY what your REALLY need!
  2. In case of problems search for the solution and change ONLY the SPECIFIC option(s)! Always note down the default setting to be able to go back in case the change did not help!
  3. NEVER fiddle around with the settings just for fun or without REALLY knowing what you are doing (or you need to go back to "square 1")!
With this approach you have most likely ALWAYS the optional settings!

Thanks that's a big help

You're welcome! I used this technique when moving to John's Fork on my RT-N66U, the the extent appropriate on my home network. It worked out extremely well for me.
