Good day to all!
first of all, I am glad to join this community with lots of information and updates. It seems the members are really really active!

To start with, I just have an ave. knowledge on networking, hence your patience is really appreciated. I am trying to upgrade or setup my home network, hence I just purchased the following:
1. Asus RT-AC68R (already installed)
2. Qnap TS 269L http://www.qnap.com/useng/index.php?lang=en-us&sn=862&c=355&sc=688&t=696&n=13447
3. 2 -3tb seagate constellation CS
4. add'l 2gb memory ram for the NAS

My initial purpose is to be able to access all shared data (documents, movies, music, etc) within the house through our pc, game consoles, cell phones and whenever we are outside our house. This is also in preparation for a small business that will need access to information within my home network.

I do have verizon fios ISP with (actiontec) router installed as bridge while the Asus RT-AC68R as my primary. I followed this guide for this setup:
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/15992 (my Ont connection is via Ethernet, I had it switch through verizon rep. from coax to ethernet).

I bought the Asus having in mind whether to flash the original firmware with DD-WRT or AsusWRT-Merlin (latest build), I went with the latter just yesterday. After flashing to Asuswrt-merlin, my connection went from 85mbps to 20mbps (download), the upload speed was not affected, but this morning when i checked the speed again (www.speedtest.net) it's back to its original speed, so I'm happy about it.

Assistance I would like to have right now (please):
1. Since I am still waiting for my NAS, i attached my seagate goflex 1tb to the USB 3.0 port of the Asus, then logged in to my Asus router but I cannot activate the USB disk, the only way I can activate it is to go to Advance Settings > Wireless > Professional > Reducing 3.0 usb interference and disable it. Is there another way to activate the USB Hard drive without disabling the aforementioned? right now I can access the hard drive on any device.
2. Is the Hardware acceleration incompatible to the QoS? when QoS is activated, the hardware acceleration is disabled automatically and the internet speed goes down a bit unlike when hardware acceleration is on, the int. speed is back to normal.
3. Once my NAS arrives, which is best to attached the NAS, at the primary router (Asus) or the bridge (Actiontec)?
4. Any configuration I should do to the AsusWRT-merlin so i can get the best possible connection/most features of my NAS as mentioned in my purpose?
5. I intend also to setup my own VPN using OpenVPN. I did see Merlin's instruction on how to setup the VPN through OpenVPN, what I am confused is on the certificates. I have zero knowledge on this issue.

I know I got a lot on my plate right now, but if you could share your information on any of my concerns, I will highly appreciate it! or if there are other links you could provide me regarding these issues.

Merlin thanks for the firmware, so far I think is better. when I access the hard drive when I had the original firmware, there is a bit of latency but with your firmware, really fast.

If I missed some information, please let me know. lastly, if i posted this on the wrong section of the forum, my apologies.

Thanks again to everyone! looking forward to your favorable responses.

1. Your USB drive seems to work only in USB 3.0 mode. Keep it like it is and you're good.
2. Yes, if you enable QoS, you lose hardware acceleration.
3. Attach it with a LAN cable to the Asus.
4. You do not need any settings on the Asus. The NAS you got can do SMB/NFS sharing and DLNA for the dumber devices. You should use those to access the NAS. The Asus in this case is only the network medium that transfers the packets - it has nothing to do with the actual sharing/streaming.
5. It is not the easiest thing to setup but if you follow the guide you should be fine. Give it a try and you'll eventually get there :)

Thank you for the quick response. Very much appreciated. Regarding the vpn certificate. Do I really need to create my own or it can be done automatically upon setting the vpn in the router? I really get lost during that portion in the guide. My concern is the security of the vpn consequently exposing my data if I make a mistake. any further advise.

(Moved this discussion to a separate thread as it's not really related to feedback on the 374.39 release, and would otherwise be lost in the flood of posts in that thread).

It will be automatically made if you choose the built-in asus vpn server (which is also OpenVPN if I'm not mistaken). If you choose the merlin version then you need to generate it. Security-wise, neither of those is really breakable unless you're hiding top-secret documents on your network and someone knows about it :)

You can still rely on the router automatically generating everything for you with my firmware - I integrated that feature that was added by Asus.

thank you so much to both of you. i'll try tomorrow setting up the vpn. I'll give you an update how it went. Just crossing my fingers here that all will be good. thanks again!
