So after all this, there was probably no reason for me to waste your time... nor for me to hack the original script.

Your post #54 was the lightbulb moment , but I guess I should modify the script for others that (in the future) may not follow the pre-req openvpn-event installation instructions to allow the explicit 'sh' command prefix in 'vpnclientX-up'
