[Release 384/NG] Asuswrt-Merlin 384.5 is now available

I had a RT-66U that was rock solid (was using 380.69_2) but due to merlin no longer supporting it I went ahead and got a RT-88U as an upgrade.
As soon as it arrived I put merlin's latest firmware (384.4_2) and have had chronic issues with 2.4ghz having to be rebooted every few days.
I've tried changing several options that have been suggest but nothing works.
In effort to see if its just a bug introduced in the newer code I want to downgrade from 384.5 to 380.70. Is there anything I should know before doing this / is it even supported?

I've moved the devices on my network that i saw dhcp requests over and over to another ssid on another router and now the 2.4ghz ssid on the ac88u is pretty stable so far.

There is nothing in the logs.. I asked in another thread if theres some place I can get additional logs but it fell on deaf ears.

@RMerlin feature request or change not quite sure. The language selection in upper right of every page lists all language with a simple hover. This could cause trouble as I selected another language by error and had to figure out how to change back. Wouldn't a click and list be a better option than having it flash up when ever you hover? This is on a Ubuntu box using both Chrome and Firefox. Both up to date. Just a thought.....is it closed source now?

On the AC3200 (only) the NVRAM size gets changed with the move to the 382/384 codebase; once you upgrade, you can't go back to 380. It may seem to work for a while (it did for me and apparently others), but it's not stable.

Sorry to bump again, but I was thinking about this at work...

Do you know if the increased nvram size impacts the ability to run Tomato? Might experiment (again) this weekend.

I have no idea. Never used anything but Merlin.

I don't know how doable that is, depends on how Asus implemented it.

I was seeing the same thing over and over in my ac3100 and my ac88. Not sure what i did that fixed it. I ended up wiping and re-configuring my devices and repeaters completely from scratch multiple times. I have to ask, did you do a full wipe?

Yea so it is not doing it every time now it eventually stops after every thing stabilizes I notice it only happens for like 10 minutes after a reboot.

As far as i know it is caused by incoming connections. But incoming could be both on the wan as well as the lan side. On linux based system there's a connection tracking system which usually maintain 2 tables. 1 for active connections and one for connections that are expected to be active. In a single table solution a DoD could be triggered by filling the table with expectations which eventually will starve out the 'good' active connections. This becuase the 2. Table wil have a max value to prevent the situation. So no 2. Table means nothing to prevent the situation.
However this is not a full blown Linux, at least not to my understanding, but this is as close as I can get. So if no ftp, torrents or anything like that, which could cause a lot of connection, this is my best guess.
The kernel nf_conntrack is a bit more complicated than explained so simplified quite some.

So on a full blown linux server i would look into, is there need for an excessive amount of connections. If yes I could adjust the 'nf_conntrack_expect_max' value. If not I would need to look into what is generating this amount of traffic.
Been working with Linux quite some years now and have never, so far, needed to adjust the max value.
Actually i dont know the max value of the asus. Perhaps around 65000 like on a linux

As this only happens when my internet connection is down I must have something in my network that desperatly wants to "call home" then. I didn't see this issue in my old N66U, but at about the same time as I bought this AC86 I also got a Chromecast Ultra... Will try and disconnect that one the next time the situation occur.

I would like to use the parental control/time scheduling. If it is enabled, I have to disable NAT Acceleration. Then the speed will slow down to around ~190/200.
If I set NAT Acc. to Auto, the speed will be increased around ~600/200 but the Time Scheduling won't work correctly (usually blocks the internet access in allowed time and enables it in forbidden time).
All other function like QoS, Traffic Analyzer, AiCloud are off...

The previous version (380???) did not have any speed problem with NAT Acceleration and Parental control/Time Scheduling...

Sounds like time to upgrade to an 86u, but did you do a factory reset after the update?

Remove the power cord of the router and upgrade the firmware again.

Hello everyone,
i have a Asus RT-AC86U for maybe two months, I don't know exactly... Never used oficial firmware on my Asus routers before, RT-N16, RT-AC56U, everything was great with Merlin. Last firmware used on RT-AC56U was RT-AC56U_384.4_0 and, as I mention, nothing to complain...
On RT-AC86U I used RT-AC86U_384.4_0 from the beginning but, my maximum uptime was 10 hours or so... I only get errors several times a day and, I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or is it something wrong with my hardware...
Sometimes, when crashes occurs I can't acces IPv6 adresses and it's not that bad but, more often the generic HDD USB 3.0 that I use as FTP storage, it disappear from menu and I have to manually shutdown everything...
I really need some help... Sorry if my english is bad.
