Remote access to RT-AC68U

pwaggs

New Around Here
Just purchased Asus RT-AC68U from Amazon April 23. It is replacing an old Netgear which is dying.

I am currently in a remote location and want to walk my wife through the initial setup of the router and then activate remote access allowing me to further configure it from where I am. With the current Netgear router, this is easy. I enter the router's address, enter username and password and I have full access to the router's menus and I maintain the network while I am deployed. Very useful when you have a teenager who can crash a network just being curious or have to maintain various guest networks.

How do I set up my new Asus for the same remote access capability? It looks like it may be through the AiDisk, however, there is nothing in the manual which says "for remote access to the Asus router and its menus..."

Again, I am looking for remote access from a completely remote network, not attached to my new router physically or wireless.

TIA.

Administration->Enable Web Access from WAN.
And you will be able to access it using http from outside.

Ok, So I enable the WAN, set it to automatic IP and It will provide me an http address I can access from an outside location.

When I access from outside, is it the same router username and password and will I have full access to the router menus?

I know that these are basic questions that would take three minutes to determine in front of the router, but I am trying to figure this out over Skype from 12,000 miles away to show somebody who's tech savvy is challenged by programming a microwave.

Asus has an online dummy ui you may find useful to familiarize yourself with http://event.asus.com/2012/nw/dummy_ui/EN/

*this is for the RT-AC66U but it's the most recent I could find - the look and feel is the same

one thing to note about the Asus is it will temporarily disconnect (maybe just wireless?) when applying certain settings that other routers don't seem to do
Like when applying / enabling port forwarding for example. Don't ask me why.

Hopefully last ridiculous question on this, however, I see where when I allow it to be accessible from WAN. I select that. It allows me to select HTTP as my port of web access from WAN. But then is my dial in IP address now the address on the Front Page Network Map WAN IP with the :8080 added to it?
