ROG Rapture GT-AC5300 (Owners)

I personally find the stability of this router erratic. Logged into the GUI this morning and bam router reboots with nothing in the log to explain why. I did notice though that when logging in that it negotiates and drops port speeds approximately 2-3 times in the system log, starting at the lowest speed which is odd:

Others have reported that this router is pretty sensitive to the quality of the cable. Somebody actually returned 6 units thinking they had a bad router before using the included Ethernet cable which resolved his/her issues.

You've probably tried this, but just thought I'd share.

I think those issues were with the WAN port, where mine is with no1 LAN port
Cables have been changed, different PC used and issue persists. Noticed on the last connection issue when link rate was negotiated and the router crashed that there was a CPU stall:

I have also been getting 15 Mbps transfer speeds. It doesn't matter what USB 3.0 port I use. I've even tried an external SSD, but recall that a few firmware cycles back, I was getting 90 Mbps (telling me this is just software related). I've tried full factory resets, etc. to no avail. Anyone else overcome this? This is definitely the biggest issue for me.
  • Also any plans for merlin to release firmware for this model?
  • Additional issues include not being able connect DM2 (Download Master) windows app (it configures fine in the wizard, finds server and settings just fine, but the red X keeps showing on the connection screen). Also even though I have WAN enabled for remote access to download master, I cannot connect to it from outside the network (even though I am able to connect to the router settings page remotely) (I know the android app is broken, but this still applies when trying to use the good ol browser). I also have issues with SONOS, Harmony and WEMO to be discoverable using the APPS. They are all connected to the internet, and able to access outside network, but they don't seem to see each other within the network properly.

I had a problem with an HP Envy printer, that turned out to be a problem with the HP Envy firmware that wasn't a problem for an older WiFi router that I had. And I had similar problems with Sonos and Wemo until firmware 3.0.0.4.382.11243. You should now be on firmware 3.0.0.4.12184. I'm using Sonos and WeMo with no problems now.

Yes, the WAN port was the context of the other person that was having problems. You might have a bad unit. I would try exchanging.

Yes, I am on 12184 and can confirm its communicating with those devices (more testing to follow). Bluetooth coexistence is set to "DISABLE"... To clarify, I am connected via Ethernet to the router, not Wifi. I also tested 2 different computers, and did it with Wifi and Network cable.

I love the hardware spec of this beast and have 5 households on my RT-AC66R(U) running the latest merlin but it can't handle the traffic anymore. I have approximately 30 devices connected (guess networks) on a shared (100 mbps X 20 mbps) cable connection. and my current unit capps out at around 70mbps down on single device and 60mbps on 3 streams and really lags big time if there is more than 4 streams. Everything extra is turned of so as of now my unit is a glorified DHCP-AP-SWITCH. I need something that can handle 300mbps down and 50mbps up and 15 concurrent streams of data at a avg of 8mbps each. Some help if you please. (I know that the cpu is the issue currently as it is bottlenecking all the time.)

It depends I suppose. I had the RT-AC5300 and it worked fine for the most part. It did come with issues early on, that were fixed by firmware patches. I switched because it had 8 Ethernet ports (which I use), and more CPU power. I'm confident they will fix the issues in the future, but at the price point, this should never have been an issue. I did consider trying the netgear nighthawk X10, as I've heard good things. I did get lost on your rant about internet speed and devices, as the internet speed you have/share, shouldn't be a problem for the router you have. Either way, good luck on your next purchase.
 
AS for the internet speed rant here is some clarification. the 66r cpu maxes out at 70 mbps and a direct connection gives me 115mbps. I believe that it being a single lower ghz cpu is my issue.

Here’s what I would do and I think this advice is sound for any purchase of a new generation of technology.

Buy the GT-AC5300, but only from a retailer that will provide hassle free returns. There are too many horror stories about this device on this forum, not to protect yourself.

But, if your experience is like mine, after fine tuning your confit you will be amazed at the performance of this Wi-Fi router. You won’t be able to peg the CPU cores of this device and if you tune your devices to balance the three separate Wi-Fi bands you will be able to get the performance you target.

Of course, many factors will be at play (the client devices, your environment in terms of obstacles like walls and interference from other devices).

But I can assure you that if you get a properly functioning unit, CPU will no longer limit your performance.
 
Well I changed the router out for a new one and all my issues persist. ROG Rep told me it was my hardware card/cable but I disagree. Put back my old trusty RT-N66U and no issues what so ever - negotiates link fine and no dropouts for the 8 hours that I ran it.
Connected the GT5300 and another CPU stall occurred within 2 hours causing the router to lockup requiring a hard reset - this happened when 5 people were connected 2 of which were streaming. Correct me if I am wrong but a CPU stall is generally caused by a software issue. There are numerous people online complaining of sporadic reboots, some of which occur when the router is under load. Surely all of these people cannot have faulty hardware and in my personal opinion this is indicative of poorly compiled software/software issues.
I am prepared to give this router a go if newer firmware is available but at this time the RT2600AC is looking mighty appealing.

Update:
I have narrowed down some of my issues to a combination of firmware and Game ports 1 and 2. These test were carried out by hot plugging the PC LAN cable into all of the routers LAN ports and also disabling and re-enabling the network adapter on the Win 10 PC, which simulates the PC going into sleep mode and waking up and where some of my issues also occurred, such as router GUI slow down, reboots and CPU stalls.
Latest firmware 12184:
Game ports 1 and 2- any link negotiation intermittently occurs with lower speed being negotiated first (sometimes 10 or 100 Mbps or both)this is then dropped and then 1000 Mbps is negotiated where it stays. Ports 3 and 4 negotiate at 1000 Mbps straight off the bat. Ports 5-8 show no negotiation in the system log but all connect at 1000 Mbps.
Older firmware 11243:
Ports 1and 2 will negotiate at 1000 Mbps most times and are shown in the system log. Ports 3-8 show no negotiation in the system log but all connect at 1000 Mbps. The older firmware tends to work much better when it comes to link negotiation.
GUI slowdown and slow speeds only occur on Game ports 1 and 2 and this is generally when the PC comes out of sleep or when the network cable is unplugged then plugged back, or when a change is done to the router such as DHCP mapping, which results in the router rebooting and the port links must be negotiated again. Although the links on the port show a link of 1000 Mbps has been negotiated, router speeds are significantly reduced and actual throughput on ports 1 and 2 is only 3-5 Mbps when tested on Speedtest. However, unplugging and re-plugging the LAN cable or disabling and re-enabling the network connection on the PC results in my full download speed of 100 Mbps being attained. It is also important to note that I had a switch plugged into Game port 2, through which a lot of the household traffic was coming. Since moving this switch cable to another port issues have been significantly reduced.
All of this in my opinion point to the issue being with the firmware and some sort of underlying problem with the switch software in the firmware specifically relating to the "Special Game Ports" 1 and 2.
Please feel free to correct me if you think my analyses might be wrong or if you have any suggestions.

Hi all

I currently have 2 RT AC5300 deployed in my house and will be looking to add another one for better wifi coverage. My question for those that actually own the GT AC5300 or possibly both is do you notice a big difference with wireless coverage and range? This is my primary concern as I'm trying to blanket 4 floors and a garden in complete wireless coverage.

The features on the GT look compelling although I don't game as much anymore, and it also doesn't currently support Merlin which is the firmware I use on all my routers. The price tag is quiet a bit more then what you can get the RT's for at this point but if the signal strength is not much better then I'm not sure I see a point in my case.

Any input or thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thanks!
 
With Game ports 1 and 2 not being used I now have an up time of over 2 days! although I still have the throttling issue when making changes that necessitate a restart of the switch. This has only been achieved by disabling most of the routers functions such as QOS, IPS etc which is kind of counter to why the router was purchased in the first place. I have decided that if a firmware resolving these issues is not made available soon (been over a month since the last one was released) I will exchange it for a router that is more stable and established like the RT2600ac or X10.
The end user should not be the beta tester for ASUS and while a few bugs are acceptable in a new product release the GT5300 has major underlying software issues and appears the be the test platform for the 382 code base. I have been an avid product supporter of ASUS but in all honesty this router with all of its issues has left me with a sour taste in my mouth and a hesitancy to buy any more "cutting edge" products.

I have been running for almost 4 days now without issues- albeit with most functions on the router disabled.
For anyone having issues I suggest a hard reset and do not enable QOS, IPS, Game Boost etc.
Do not use Lan ports 1 and 2 as I suspect there is an underlying software issue with the Triple-level game acceleration on these 2 ports.
If you have a GUI that is slow try and disable then enable the Ethernet adapter in either Device manager or Network and Sharing.
Let me know if any of this helps.

PS Hopefully we will get an ETA for the next firmware as I am about to kick this router to the kerb. Might as well have a $50 router with all the functions I had to disable to get some form of stability.

I emailed ROG support guy and asked if there was any ETA for the new firmware. I am running out of time to return the unit and running it on bare minimum options is counter to the whole reason I purchased the unit. Don't want to sound like a whiner but I spent NZ$759.00 on it as a premium product but am unable to use most of the functions. I now have an up time of 4 1/4 days running in the bare bones mode which definitely points to the issue being firmware/software and not related to any of my hardware.
