New Around Here
Hello everyone, googling brought me here, hope I'm in the right place.

So I recently got 200/100 mbps fiber at my apartment(which is huge where I'm living). Naturally the router from ISP is some crap, brand name Speedport and it can't even deliver that speed over wifi, only LAN.

So i bought that Asus router and connected it to ONT device. Everything works, great connection, 100% speed on wifi. But the thing is rebooting every few days.

I'm not too knowledgeable in networking but I found this in Asus web interface from the System log:

Sep 19 17:02:15 rc_service: ntp 720:notify_rc restart_upnp
Sep 19 17:02:15 miniupnpd[722]: shutting down MiniUPnPd
Sep 19 17:02:15 miniupnpd[734]: version 1.9 started
Sep 19 17:02:15 miniupnpd[734]: HTTP listening on port 48285
Sep 19 17:02:15 miniupnpd[734]: Listening for NAT-PMP/PCP traffic on port 5351
Sep 19 17:02:16 rc_service: ntp 720:notify_rc restart_diskmon
Sep 19 17:02:16 disk_monitor: Finish
Sep 19 17:02:16 disk monitor: be idle
Sep 19 17:02:17 miniupnpd[734]: upnp_event_recv: recv(): Connection reset by peer
Sep 19 17:02:23 miniupnpd[734]: upnp_event_recv: recv(): Connection reset by peer

Does that mean anything to anyone? Is there any way I can solve this? Every time the router reboots, the log contains those lines.

I'm using the latest Asus firmware but I switched to the previous version to test it but it's still happening.

Those look like normal startup events in your log, I believe.

Is there an issue with the power at your location? Or is it just the router that reboots?

Have you performed a full reset to factory defaults after flashing the firmware you want to use followed by a minimal and manual configuration of the router to secure it and connect to your ISP?

Have you turned off all your network equipment, including the ONT (and physically unplugged everything from the wall power) for at least half an hour before plugging everything in, in order?

Are you using passwords and/or ssids' with other than alphanumeric characters?

Is the network heavily taxed when the router reboots? Does a certain device connecting make the reboots happen?

What features of the router are you using? How many devices are connected? Is it running out of ram?

Wow, thanks for the extensive reply, I'll try and answer everything.

1. Absolutelly no power issues. Ever. New building, new apartment, never had any devices power off.

2. The router came with 3.0.0.4.380.1234 firmware. I'm completely new to routers so on initial install I have not touched ANY settings, because I have no idea what they do, other than the following; secured the SSID with password, enter my PPPoE username and password, under LAN IPTV tab I selected Manual settings and put 100 VID under internet(required for internet to work). I believe that's a minimal configuration, no?

After I started noticing reboots I flashed the latest FW 3.0.0.4.380.3971 followed by a factory reset and configuration as above. Reboots continued, so I flashed the previous FW and factory reset and all that. Now I'm on 3.0.0.4.380.3310 for a day and so far so good.

3. No, I have not powered off everything and plugged everything in order. I'm not sure what that will accomplish, but I can and will try it.

4. I left the SSID's default; ASUS and ASUS_5G(I guess the underscore is not alphanumeric?). The password only have alphanumeric characters.

5. I don't believe the network is under heavy load. At most 1 laptop(5 Ghz wifi), 1 PS4(connected via LAN cable) and 2 Android devices(5 Ghz wifi) are on at the same time. Just casual browsing and gaming online. No local file transfers, streaming, etc. I only need the router so I can use 200/100 internet connection wirelessly. That's part of the reason I did not want to spend more money on more expensive equipment as I believe my needs are not that of a heavy user. The reboots are not often, so far, once every 2 days but they always happen at the worst times.

6. I don't know if it is running out of RAM, how can I check that?

I will do another factory reset and follow these instructions here: http://www.snbforums.com/threads/no...l-and-manual-configuration.27115/#post-205573

1. Even with this info, I always recommend to power the network with a quality UPS. Even if it seems power isn't an issue.

2. Seems as minimal as possible, yes.

Have you considered using RMerlin's firmware (latest stable is 380.62)? RMerlin closely follows Asus' efforts with an emphasis on bug cleanups along with a few extra capabilities.

3. What this does is resets the connection with your ISP, gets rid of static electricity among and between connected devices and cables and generally gives your network a good known starting point to begin further troubleshooting (if necessary at that time). It does seem a bit like voodoo, but it has proven itself many times over when a customers network is exhibiting otherwise inexplicable glitches.

4. Is the ssid 'new' for your clients? If not, using a completely new ssid may help.

5. You are probably correct that the network is not under heavy load, on the surface. However, your ISP speeds do heavily impact the router and are probably causing it to spike in cpu and ram usage when those top speeds are reached (I've seen the same on an RT-AC68U with 100/20 Mbps D/U ISP speeds).

6. Does the Asus stock firmware not show a 'Status' tab on the top right when you first log onto the router? (If not, another reason to use RMerlin's firmware).
