Hello,

I just got my RT-AC66U today and flashed the latest firmware from Merlin, 3.0.0.4._270.24.

Sadly, I have problems with my 5GHz connection.

As soon as I walk into my bedroom, my connection with 5GHz is absolutely gone.
Before the door of my bedroom, the connection is nearly full.

If I'm just connected to 2,4GHz, I don't have this issue. Surfing is fine in my bedroom with 2,4GHz. But with 5GHz, it's just not working that range.

Is it a hardware problem or is this even normal?
Is there something I could change in the settings of the router?

Help please. :(

5 GHz signals don't travel as far as 2.4 GHz signals. Depending on the distance between your bedroom and router and your home/apartment's construction, the problem you are describing is normal.

The advantages of 5 Ghz are mostly marketing hype. You may get better speeds with a 5 Ghz connection but probably only if you are in the same room as the router. Doesn't make much difference what brand of router you buy.

The 2.4 Ghz radio using N normally has better range and penetrating power than 5 Ghz.

Before I spent my $200 on the rt-n66u I had done so much reading of reviews on dual band routers, that all of that info became obvious.
Do people spend this kind of money without research?
By the way our own Tim Higgins was one of the main contributors to my decision to go with the rt-n66u.

Well, I wanted to upgrade to the Asus RT-N66U or the RT-AC66U.

At that time, the AC66U was the same price as the N66U. So the choice was obvious for me. :p
