Why is this version more than doubling the size?

No kidding! Does the 68U even have enough memory to flash that size of a firmware? MD5 hash matched. Has anyone tried to flash it?

UPDATE:

I suspect that because the AC68U V3 is so much different than the preceding version the new update contains two version of the firmware. Same for the AC66U_B1. I have no proof of this...yet.

If the firmware was that different wouldn't they build and release it on its own channel?
The AC66U_B1 isn't bundled together with the older AC66U.

That would make sense. Just never heard of a flash of an optional dual image. Typically what you see on this site are complaints of how a firmware flash failed, then the person flashing realizes that the incorrect firmware (needed to flash the RT-AC86U and flashed the RT-AC68U in error, for example--lots of dyslexic people frequent this site? ;) ). So assuming that is true, never imagined that the flashing imaging/software/app could be so selective.

UPDATE: As noted in my prior post @ColinTaylor appears to have determined what is going on with that 91MB Firmware and @nukepip has flashed the new firmware without issues so far.

Updated 2 x AC68U on my mesh network just now from 9.0.0 beta manual upload from admin panel on main hub - both came back no issues so far

Why is this version more than doubling the size?
Because it contains two firmware images: one for the "traditional" RT-AC68U, and one for the forecoming RT-AC68U V4.

So the double in size is not due to padding after the data from this post?
I haven't examined the file to determine if the dual firmware file was properly generated in this particular case, but I can tell that it's Asus's intention to eventually have the RT-AC68U firmware image contain two different firmwares.

Results with this firmware version are promising! On the beta firmware from February I had the AC66U_B1 as a root AiMesh router with two AC68U AiMesh nodes. One node was connected directly into a LAN port on the root and had a successful Ethernet backhaul. The other was connected through a pair of managed Netgear switches connected via fiber. The Ethernet backhaul would not connect but the WIFI backhaul did work. With the upgrade of the root and nodes to this firmware version both nodes accepted the connect via Ethernet first and the node connected through the managed switch pair now has Ethernet backhaul!
Am cross posting this to the AC66U_B1 new firmware post.

tried twice from the router update page, it goes through the motions of updating but it stays on 3.0.0.4.385_20633 when the updater is offering 3.0.0.4.386_43129.

Is 386 stable enough to upgrade from 385? I heart a lot of bad story on the 386.

I use AC68U as AP only, if there is no WiFi performance improvement, should I upgrade? Thanks,
