Yes - I have always used "Share with account" but I have also tested without. But thanks alot for the info - I have disabled Samba sharing for the moment. It was indeed accessible from WAN. Eventhough the shares were password protected I didn't trust the security completely - better safe than sorry. I will await an updated version of the firmware and see if that solves my issue.

Although it's probably unrelated to your problem, I'm glad I could make you aware of the potential security issue. The security issue is not only dumbfounding, but also troubling.

I have contacted Asus networking support and the issue regarding corruption of files over Samba will be solved in the next firmware release. I have tested a beta version provided by Asus and can confirm it has solved my issue.

Out of curiosity, could you telnet into your router, and post the output from the following command?

Code:
lsmod

I just want to see if the corruption fix is related to something I know they were working on implementing lately, or a different fix. The output from that command would give me my answer. ;)

Sure - see attached output. I was told it had something to do with the Broadcom-Samba module.

Thanks. The log confirms that they didn't fix it the way I thought they would, so it might indeed be a Samba-specific issue.

Used "MiniTool Partition Wizard" freeware to format to Ext 4 on my Win10 PC, worked without any issues. WD 4TB My Book.
Downside is that you can only copy files back to the HDD via Samba and the HDD connected to the router and not much faster while being connected to the PC...
Still, worth for me to avoid I/O errors and zero KB files while using HDD NTFS formatting...
