RT-AC86U powers up to Internet red led, then powers off

Had one of my RT-AC86U's stop working after a few months of great operation. Powered off/on but at the boot up point to where the red internet led comes on, unit then powers off. You can repeat this circle as often as you want, until you get bored and stop.
Put router into firmware recovery mode and loaded the latest ASUS firmware, successfully. But alias the same issue afterwards. Also tried Merlin's code, also the same power issue.
Phoned ASUS support, will replace the unit as a known issue. A FYI...if it helps other forums followers.
| Picked up the unit from ASUS repair centre (always a positive experience..BTW..added reason I buy ASUS!). The issue of power off at the Network LED coming on at power up, they advised was 3rd Party firmware caused. They installed the latest level ASUS RT-AC86U firmware and all is ok now.
Prior to me taking the unit into ASUS support I had put unit into recovery mode and restored the same ASUS firmware level, they had installed, yet for me it didn't change the uncontrolled power off, on power up. Puzzled as to why Merlin's 384.5 code and the ASUS 384 code, both codes, in restore mode didn't fix the problem, when ASUS service appear to have done nothing else then what I did. Anyone have ideas?

Sadly ironic...now have this identical issue with my 2nd RT-AC86U unit. Another trip to the ASUS service centre in Markham, Ontario.

Why are you using the 384.5 firmware still? Any particular reason for using such an old version?

Are you still using the same power adaptor with the second unit? Did you test the first unit with a new adaptor? Do you use a UPS on your network equipment?

What other firmware have you tried on both routers? Did you flash the latest version and then do a full reset to factory defaults?

I highly doubt that 'third party firmware' was the issue. Just an easy answer for them to give. ;)

@L&LD his first post has been a year ago with 384.5, he might not use it any more now!
He gave only an update that his second unit died too for the same reason.

Thank you. :)

I didn't expect the same user to be replying almost a year apart! :D

Thanks for interest, just really a FYI for readers. Have tried in recovery mode code levels of the two different 348.12_Alpha 1's and 348.11, also ASUS's 384-45717. All load ok from reovery install, but the physical symptoms do not change. Tried early on a different power adapter. Looks to be a Hardware problem!!
| ASUS replaced the unit (on Warranty) due to a hardware problem. On Routers they don't repair, just replace.
