RT-AC87U bridge mode fails to connect

Hi all,

I'm trying to use an RT-AC87U in bridge mode to the 5Ghz wireless on my R8000 but it refuses to connect.

I've tried disabling the R8000 Smart Connect but it still refuses to connect to either of the two distinct 5Ghz SSIDs.

It's hard to blame the R8000 for this as I have 2 DIR-865Ls, a DIR-868L and (which the RT-AC87U is to replace) a WRT1900AC all connecting fine to the 5Ghz wireless on the R8000 as bridges.

Does anyone else have one of these working in bridge mode over 5Ghz wireless?
To what model router?

I managed a while ago to bridge the AC87U with my R7000 (access point). Pretty 5ghz link speeds as well (886). But eventually had to replace the AC87U with my old AC66U for better stability and higher link speeds.
That was on stock firmware. Should work though.

Interesting, it most definitely doesn't work to the R8000.

It's also interesting that your AC66U perform so well, I'll need to get mine back from my son .... perhaps I gave up on it too soon.

fyi in case someone looks here,

It was recommended in another thread that I remove non-alphanumeric and space characters from the 5Ghz password and much to my surprise that worked.

The 2.4Ghz band works OK with non-alphanumeric characters, I didn't have spaces in it so I don't know if that also works.

But one thing that's more of a worry is that ASUS played the "not supported on anything other than two RT-AC87Us" card for the problem I logged about it.

They didn't even try and help with something like an "it's not supported however we will try and help but it might not work" or a "it's not supported for other than these *** specific ASUS routers but we'll try and help".

So, apart from the fact that bridge mode is meant to be able to connect to other routers if they are compatible, ASUS are happily unaware that there's a bug with the password handling of the 5Ghz wireless on the AC87U.

No, I'm not forgiving of this since I will pursue this type of issue when I'm the one asking the support questions, regardless of policy, and yes it gets me into trouble sometimes, ;)

The first person that suggested this solution was actually an Asus employee. So maybe tech support isn't aware about it, but at other levels they do know about this issue.
