RT-AC87U not updating DDNS IP address

Installed Merlin 380.64.2 on a new RT-AC87U and can't get the DDNS (asuscomm) to update IP address. Merlin shows that the DDNS is registered.

Yet, when I ping or query (nslookup) xxxxx.asuscomm.com I get a different IP address of xx.xxx.xxx.30 and my actual WAN address is xx.xxx.xxx.45. I can connect to system using the WAN IP address, but not through DDNS.

I tried turning off and on DDNS, rebooting the router and my cable modem with no avail.

Is there a way I can force the IP update to asuscomm.com ?

Any information is greatly appreciated!

Ok, I unplugged the new RT-AC87U from the cable modem and plugged in my old RT-N66U and my ip comes up at xxx.xxx.xxx.30 and I get internet access. Then I unplugged the RT-N66U and plugged in the new RT-AC87U and it comes up with xxx.xxx.xxx.45 with internet access.

With both modems plugged in I query xxxx.asuscomm.com DDNS and each time it comes back with the old modem IP address of xxx.xxx.xxx.30. It isn't updating to the newer RT-N66U xxx.xxx.xxx.45 ip address.

I am stumped!

If you're using the same DDNS entry it is tied to the original router. You need to assign a new asuscomm.com address to the original router first and then the new router will update against the original asuscomm.com address after about 12 hours.

• Then you can use your new ASUS router to register your preferred hostname.

So is the asusddns hostname is registered to a router?
And why did I get a two different WAN IP address when I connect the new router (xxx.xxx.xxx.45 or the old old router(xxx.xxx.xxx.25) to the cable modem?

Correct - it's actually linked to the MAC of the router.
You'll get a different IP address from your ISP based on the MAC of the router and not the modem.

Well, I did exactly as you said and everything is working now.
I learned something new today, I never realized the DDNS was tied to the MAC address.

Only when dealing with the asuscomm.com DDNS as it's only available to ASUS routers.

I had exactly the same issue and found your answer. Also, it appears that you don't have to wait 12 hours, you can go to http://iplookup.asus.com/nslookup.php and enter your original/desired asuscomm.com name and see if it is still registered. If it can't be resolved that name is once more available for assignment.
