RT-AC88U gets sluggish after a short time

While I have not been able to time it, I suspect after about 1 hour (or so) my Asus RT-AC88U router gets really sluggish and essentially can't access the internet (it tries and a few bits come through)...and times out. This is wired or wireless. If I reboot the router, it comes back just fine and works again (really well) for another hour or so).

I can't tell for sure if the CPU is getting hammered because I can't get into the GUI when it gets to this point, but whenever I do see it (when it is working fine), the cpu's are at 0% and the ram is at about 25%.

I am running 380.65_2, but my previous version was acting the same way.

Can anyone help?

No. Restoring a backup (from the GUI) would be like you didn't do a reset to factory defaults in the first place.

As L&LD pointed out restore from backup basically undo the benefit of factory reset. Proper way is to factory restore and do minimum configuration to get internet working and work from there.

Can you access SSH session when GUI interface not working? If you can enter the top command, it will show processes running and CPU consumption which may help diagnose the problem.

Good thought, I'll have to wait for it to take a dump again. I suspect I won't be able to get in, but it's worth a shot.

You can leave a ssh open and issue top. Since you say it happens within one hour, I would watch it change over time until you get the symptoms you describe.

Try turning off that hardware acceleration unless you are running above 100 mbps. It was causing my RT-3100 to run slower when it was on, but I'm only running 40/10 mbps.

It was reported/seen once before https://www.snbforums.com/threads/100-io-on-both-cores.33824/. But not reply. Maybe @RMerlin can comment on these.

The memory appears to be okay. Any entries in the syslog?

At this point, I am out of ideas other than try to do another reset and reenter settings manually. The AC88U's have been a top performer for me.

These entries appear to be about data collisions:

collection, not collision. This is part of the Trend Micro DPI engine.

I rebooted again and it was fine for a little while, but now acting up. Here is some more info, some devices are working some are not. It is not isolated to just wireless or wired. I have one wired devices that is working and one is not. Also, one wireless devices is working and one is not. There are probably others working/not working, but it shows it is not one type of connection or another.

What do I look for in the syslog? I guess I need the location of the syslog too.
