I am having issues with my RT-N66U dropping 2.4ghz connections (yellow exclamation point on Wifi signal in windows). I have full signal strength and I am only 10 feet from the router through one wall. I am losing connection several times a day.

I believe have ruled out an ISP internet connectivity issue. Disconnecting from the wireless network and then reconnecting results in the connection coming back immediately. A problem with ISP connectivity would not be resolved by doing this.

I am not 100% sure but it seems like it doesn't drop all connections at the same time but I have confirmed that at least one other computer on the network is having the same problem.

System uptime on the router is several days so the router itself is not restarting.

QOS is turned on.

I have tried changing various settings and then monitoring the connection to see if this resolves the issue.

I have tried the follow steps:
  • - Placed router in upright position to maximize airflow and minimize heat. No results
  • - Updated router to latest firmware. No results
  • - Updated client wireless adapter drivers. No results
  • - Disabled 5ghz band radio. (no devices use it anyway) No results
  • - Set static channel. Used inSSIDer to identify the channel with the least interference (channel 11). Link score varies between 70-80. No results
  • - Set static IP address for devices, thinking it may have been a problem with DHCP assigning new IPs. No results
  • - Changed channel bandwidth between 20mhz, 40mhz and 20/40 mhz. No results
  • - Adjusted Network Key Rotation Interval from 3600 to 0 and various other intervals. No results
  • - Disabled b/g protection. No results

Router is only about a month old. I have considered using a third party firmware but I am worried that it may void the warranty.

Asus phone support was totally useless telling me its an ISP problem or channel problem.

Any suggestions would be really helpful. Thanks :)

I'm having the same problem. Have u figured out a way to fix it?

Unfortunately no, I have just been living with it. I even tried using Merlins custom firmware with no results in fixing the issue. If you come across anything that works please share.

I have seen this problem, except on the 5GHz band. After a few hours of connection, devices would no longer stay connected to the 5GHz band and would instead connect to the 2.4GHz band. Any firmware above 35-4 SDK5 exhibited this behavior regardless of wireless settings.

With 35-4 SDK5, all devices have been rock solid and continuously connected on the 5GHz band.

I know you clearly stated that you have already tried this, but I had a similar problem with my RT-N66U, and the only configuration change I made to fix it was changing the Channel bandwidth from 40MHz to 20MHz -only on the 2.4GHz Frequency. I also reinstalled the firmware version that I was currently running over the top to rule out any mis-applied configuration settings from the previous update.

I was, and am, running Asuswrt-Merlin firmware. Doing so will not affect the warranty - so no worries there.

completely out of curiosity; does setting DTIM to 2 help any? (i believe stock was 3)

i also like beacon interval at 80.

also, 90mw performed better for me than 80mw or 100mw

I have been having the same issue!! I have tried 3 different verisons of Merlins firmware without it fixing the problem. Usually mine lasts 24 hours and then NOTHING is able to connect to the WiFi. I have to reboot the router and then everything is fine....

Anyone have any ideas?
