Hello everyone! Happy to be a new Asus RTN66U owner and very happy to find this forum. Before I get to my question I just want to thank RMerlin for the awesome work that he does, not only with the firmware but with the support he provides here in the forums. :)

I am currently running the latest Asus firmware (3.0.0.4.374.979) and all is well. The wireless range is very good for my house (2 floors + basment) and I am quite satisfied with the performance. I would like to have the OpenVpn client option that is in the Merlin builds but I am not 100% sure which build to use. There are the SDK5 builds as well as the regular builds. I am not sure if I am currently using SDK5 or 6 driver. Also, when applying the Merlin firmware recommended can I just perform a regular firmware update or are there other recommended step(s)?

One last question, is there a way to know which Asus builds are associated with each Merlin build.

Thanks for all your help!

Cheers!

374.979 is an SDK6 build, so if wireless works satisfactory for you, then you can stick with the regular Asuswrt-Merlin builds - no need for the SDK5 build.

To go from an SDK6 build to another SDK6 build just flashing it directly should be fine. Note that 374.979 is a bit old compared to the code I'm currently using, so if you encounter any weird issue be prepared to do a factory default reset, and manually reconfiguring everything.

To know on which Asus source code a specific release is based on you have to see the included README-merlin.txt. I always specify on which source a specific release is based in the Features section. Also, the changelog will always mention if new Asus code has been merged in.

Thanks Merlin,

I understand, by reading other posts, that you are working on a new build with updated SDK6 dirvers? Would you recommend waiting or is this something that will take awhile before coming out?

Cheers!

If you are in no rush, give me about a week to come up with something. Currently have two or three things I have to work on before I can get a new release out.
