Scribe scribe - syslog-ng and logrotate installer

AND I can make it dissapear at will whenever I press <CLEAR> on General Log page of the GUI.
I wouldn't be surprised if that simply deletes /tmp/syslog.log, whether it is a symlink or not. syslogd would just recreate it, just like syslog-ng would just recreate /opt/var/log/messages

Man scribe is using that cpu and hard drive pretty hard
Something else, it must be. sylog-ng barely appears in htop for me, and logrotate whizzes by in a flash. Plus, scribe is just a script that runs for a few seconds and is gone.

Well when I have scribe installed the router doesnt survive a reboot before going crazy. without it the router is fine

A few ideas:
1) Using AMTM, update entware using the ew option.
2) Also on AMTM, enable disk checking using the dc option. Or, use the USB health check on the home page.
3) Look at space available on the drive using the "df" command.
4) look in the system log file for clues

OK - I think I am much closer to the problem root cause. I performed the above experiment and the symbolic link to dummy-link sticks - its always there but /tmp/syslog.log disappears. AND I can make it dissapear at will whenever I press <CLEAR> on General Log page of the GUI. Does that give you a clue?
Well it does give me something to test, and see if I can figure out at the very least how to detect that. Unfortunately there might not be a relationship between pressing clear (which may simply delete syslog.log, as @elorimer suggested) and the link disappearing when for example you run logrotate.

Can I suggest that you post here your /opt/etc/logrotate.conf file, and the files in your /opt/etc/logrotate.d directory? Or PM them to @cmkelley ? Particularly the A00global file.

I'm thinking there might be something in the call to killall that is messing this up.

Can I ask everyone to post the following (since not everyone has it in their signature)?
  • Router Model
  • Firmware version
  • Is scribe working or not?

So for me, it would be:

AC86U and AC3200
Used on both 384.11 and 384.11_2 on both routers
scribe works on both firmware on both routers

Doutbful it's related to router model or firmware, but worth verifying.

Scribe v2.0_1 (master), RT-AC86U, RMerlin v384.12 Alpha 2-g6a46c21cce, working, no issues. :)

It is saying usr/sbin/ascd is using like 90 percent of cpu

If I uninstall scribe, I dont have the issue at all. So I am thinking it has to do with issues cause at the moment it launches something causes acsd to go crazy and never settle down.

I don't know what acsd does, or how it could possibly be related to syslog-ng / logrotate, but have you tried completely power cycling (not restart) the router as suggested here: https://www.snbforums.com/threads/100-cpu-usage-on-core-1-of-ac88u.41972/page-2

Possibly a problem unique to 88U / 3100 ...
I found a number of posts. Here is one from RMerlin stating what acsd is.

There dozens more, search "acsd" in the Asuswrt-Merlin forum...

What happens when you eject the USB disk? In my case it ends all logging [syslog.log in the webgui stays totally blank after the "### Top of Log File ###" line].

Re-insert USB - does Syslog-ng start automatically? and if so - are you getting all logging activity which was not displayed while USB ejected back in Sylog.log [or in "messages" file? In my case- for e.g. there is no sign of the log entry confirming that the USB was safely ejected ... although it was.

Fully agree that when Scribe runs it is stable and doing a great job [see my specs in signature] - just gets a bit wobbly when stopped as described.
